NRL set to sign off on new TV deal

The pay-packets of league players are set to get a whole lot fatter with reports the NRL is on the verge of signing-off on a new television broadcast deal worth $1.7 billion. In what would be the richest deal in Australian sporting history, not only would millions more be flowing through to players and clubs, but scheduling of games would see sweeping changes. In a nutshell:The new deal from 2018 to 2022 would increase from $1b to $1.7bThe salary cap goes from $7.5m to $11mClub grants up from $7.8m to $12mThursday night games would become weekly fixtures. There would be one Friday night game instead of two.Monday night football could be facing the scrap-heap.Live free-to-air games would increase from two to three. All eight games would be broadcast on Pay TV.The likes of Johnathan Thurston and Greg Inglis could be in line for pay-days upwards of $1.5m a season. On the Triple M Sydney Grill Team, Triple M's Paul Kent and MG went through what this deal means for the teams and players."What it kind of means in a nutshell is that the salary cap will go from $7.5 million up to $11 million per team which will obviously mean players will have second thoughts about going to the English Super League or Union overseas but the club grants [will go up]... which has got to be good for every club," said MG."Yes it's a win for the clubs but I still think issue of funding is still going to be an issue because... they're still going to be giving more away in the salary cap so they're only left with a million dollars out there for basically club expenses," explained Kenty. The games most valuable product, State Of Origin, would remain on free-to-air while the Telegraph claims NRL CEO Dave Smith is hoping the deal will be done by the end of the year. While it looks expansion of the competition is going to be on hold for some time yet with negotiations not touching on the subject.

  • I would like the NRL to allocate fixtures. Not the TV networks and make it less Broncos friendly.

    • The NRL have shown they are inept at working out fixtures. Our game this weekend is a testament to that. Why did the NRL schedule for us to play Penrith up in Darwin when it is a local derby and would have attracted a full house at Parra?

  • What I make of this deal, from a supporters stand point, is that if you want to watch every game live you will have to sign up to 3 or more providers. Sounds a bit tedious and expensive. The extra money will be great for the game though.

    • don't know how you came to that conclusion

  • nothing will change.

" brownburg " will still play favourites with the dogs.

BA will still  resign KELLY/SEFFA COMBO .

  • Imagine all the new executives Dave Smith will be able to hire now. They'll need to build another wing at NRL HQ.
  • Yep thats all I thought about when reading this
  • So over this shit it's just $$$ now.
  • For those of you who think it'll be great that the game will get extra money wake up you fools.
    • Wake up to what?
