NRL left waiting on Parramatta Eels officials

So, after the expensive & failed court challenge that basically was about "we weren't given a fair chance to give our side before you provisionally suspended us". After all the protestations of innocence, the "wait until you hear our side" pleas. After all the pain the fans have been put through. After all that, only one of the 5 managed to get his response in by the deadline. If I'd been accused of something like this and was innocent, I'd be desperate to take any opportunity to argue my case.

NRL left waiting on Parramatta Eels officials

June 8, 2016

The NRL will decide on Thursday whether to take any further action against Parramatta's five provisionally suspended officials after their Wednesday deadline passed with only one response.

Director Peter Serrao is believed to be the only Eels official to have responded to an individual show-cause notice for salary cap breaches handed down last month by the governing body.

The developments come just one day after the NSW Supreme Court's rejection of their challenge against their provisional suspensions. It means the NRL alone will decide the fate of the officials.

Eels chairman Steve Sharp, chief executive John Boulous, directors Tom Issa and Serrao, as well as football manager Daniel Anderson, had until Wednesday to explain why they should not be deregistered by the NRL.

However, only Serrao's response was at league headquarters on Wednesday by close of business.

He is expected to fight fiercely to keep his job.

If and when all responses arrive at NRL HQ, the league will then take up to 10 days to make a final ruling.

The responses of the Eels officials are separate to that needed from the club, which has until Friday to show why they should not be stripped of 12 premiership points and fined $1 million.

Meanwhile, the Eels have yet to decide on a course of action for troubled skipper Kieran Foran, who remains bedridden following season-ending surgery last weekend on his shoulder.

Foran is expected to continue working through the personal issues that forced him to miss three games earlier this season before he returned to play two matches before injuring his shoulder.

  • Like anyone expected the Board to respond in time. That would imply they respect rules!
  • Good points raised Andrew.

I wonder who has taken their places in the annual, all expenses paid, junket to Darwin?

  • It will be interesting to see if this story is correct. I can't imagine they missed the deadline. What's the benefit in that?
    • What was the benefit of the law suit? What was the benefit of the injunction? What was the benefit of not cooperating with the NRL when they offered us a 4 point deduction? What's the benefit to not resigning so the club can move on?

In a nutshell, I don't think looking for the obvious/intelligent/beneficial thing to do is the best way to predict what these chaps will do.
    • You make good points.
  • Foran is expected to continue working through the personal issues that forced him to miss three games earlier this season before he returned to play two matches before injuring his shoulder.

    • Favourite show growing up. Looking back pretty sure it was because of Christina Applegate and not Ed, although he was very funny.

  • I've been informed that this story is utter crap. I did think it was very strange that only 1 person would reply.
I've deleted my post as it was irrelevant. Apologies for going off half cocked.
All 5 responded within the time frame required. End of story.

  • Al Bundy was a legend. Bud too. Classic stuff....Kelly was sooo good.....
