NRL CAP FORCING TEAMS TO CHEAT

Phil Gould brought up a good point about melbourne and the salaary cap. melbourne hve shown what a great team look like in depth and class and putting together a squad that is proffesional and talented and consistent.

In order to di it they needed to cheat. So what does the NRL want. Team cheating so that the level of class and talent is high to promote the game with, or do we want everyone under the cap and having squads that look like cronulla and spreading an all round lower level of skill and depth across the game.

Im not defending melbourne. They are cheats and stole my title. But the NRL has to blame itself and its current cap. Melbourne have proved u need to break the rules to make a great team and a legacy anymore.

I worry that from what phil Gould said, that he definantly looks like he knows about other clubs cheating the cap, probably not as bad as melbourne but there definantly is, the nrl cant just penalize every team till the whole game is in disarray,

Teams will struggle to much to hold onto teams and try to win comps, and injuries are just hurting everyone with depth, and all the players leaving for more money overseas, its just a mess. the league needs to up the cap. simple as that. It will increase the quality of the game, the great players will stay and teams wnt need to cheat to keep the players they need on the paddock to win a premiership.

  • To be fair I don't think they needed to cheat they chose to. If they abided by the rules they still wouldve fielded a competitive side capable of winning. They are filthy dirty cheats.
    • yeh im not defending them but theres too much struggle for teams to beat the cap. If the cap was bigger they wouldnt need to worry about it.
sort of worried that the field parra is fielding might be getting close, but i think we were audited last year and it all looked good.
  • There are other teams cheating the cap too, no doubt. Let's just hope it is not us. The other clubs that spring to mind immediately are the Titans and the Rabbitohs.

Most of Gould's comments were rubbish and self interested.

Maybe the cap is too low. However that does not absolve the players from culpability. They must have known about it.
    • i def reckon players knew
  • Don't listen to Phil Gould....there are no excuses!

I've had a gut feeling about this for years....do you think the Broncos were under the cap in the 90's?!?!?!?
  • althugh gould is a wanker, his intentions and opinions are always aimed at improving the game we love so cut him some slack.
    • Gould is only interested in himself. Not the game.
  • Gould can stfu. There is NO excuse.
  • I am not sure that Gus was trying to excuse what Melbourne was doing... he was suggesting that the NRL needs to consider the ramifications of the cap.

Despite everything that has happened the Storm have been amazing to watch over the last few years. Teams aspire to play their brand of football - they are disciplined, talented and play tough football.

Gus was suggesting that it costs a lot of money to play that sort of football and it does. To have the sort of roster that Melbourne has costs more than what the salary cap allows.

I think his point was more directed toward reform of the current system rather than excusing cheating filth.
    • yeh thats right. the point was that the brand of football the storm have built a rep on has been acheived due to the fact that they have had to pay extra to do so. to keep the depth and class at the club. and so in turn the outcome is the type of football that is aspired to.
so his argument was the cap needs to increase in order to spread better quality across the comp.
