NRL Auckland Nines Stats Blog

With the NRL Auckland Nines for 2016 just over a month away, I thought I'd put up the stats blog as I said I would on the competition to get the ball rolling and get the game-time discussion/s happening once more.

It certainly won't be as detailed as the pre-game and post-game stats of the regular season, but there's enough discussion points here to get the ball rolling.

Over the first two years of the competition, the top try-scorers of the competition (broken down into specific points - that is, tries and bonus-point tries) are:

Semi Radradra - 30 (5 tries & 2 bonus point tries)
Eto Nabuli - 30 (5 tries & 2 bonus point tries)

Chris McQueen - 25 (5 tries & 1 bonus point try)
Curtis Rona - 24 (6 tries)
Josh Hoffman - 24 (6 tries)
Jake Mamo - 24 (6 tries)
Solomone Kata - 24 (6 tries)
Corey Norman - 22 (3 tries & 2 bonus point tries)
Shaun Johnson - 20 (4 bonus point tries)
Reece Robinson - 20 (5 tries)
Kyle Feldt - 20 (5 tries)
Mitch Pearce - 18 (2 bonus point tries & 2 tries)
Ben Hunt - 17 (3 tries & 1 bonus point try)
Will Chambers - 17 (3 tries & 1 bonus point try)
Joel Reddy - 17 (1 bonus point try & 3 tries)
Sosaia Feki - 17 (3 tries & 1 bonus point try)
Blake Ayshford - 17 (3 tries & 1 bonus point try)
Brett Morris - 16 (4 tries)
Tuimoala Lolohea - 16 (4 tries)
Nathan Gardner - 16 (4 tries)
Matt King - 16 (4 tries)
Jack Bird - 16 (4 tries)

As you can see, our very own Semi Radradra thrives in the format as expected and leads this statistic. Corey Norman also excels in the format and is in fifth spot for most points scored from tries.

Interestingly, the Eels are equal third in terms of bonus point tries scored as this suggests:

7 bonus point tries for the Sharks.
6 bonus point tries for the Warriors.
5 bonus point tries for the Eels.
5 bonus point tries for the Bunnies.
4 bonus point tries for the Knights.
4 bonus point tries for the Tigers.
4 bonus point tries for Manly.
4 bonus point tries for the Broncos.
3 bonus point tries for the Dragons.
3 bonus point tries for the Titans.
3 bonus point tries for the Storm.
3 bonus point tries for the Cowboys.
2 bonus point tries for the Roosters.
1 bonus point try for the Panthers.
1 bonus point try for the Raiders.

Also, the Eels have had a total of 13 try-scorers across the 2 years of competition: Semi, Norman, Robinson, Toutai, Sandow, Ma'u, Folau, Lavaka, Junior, Terepo, Moeroa, Takairangi & Faraimo.

The Eels will play the Rabbitohs & the Storm for the first time in pool games.

If anyone wants any other stats regarding the competition, ask, and I'll see if it's possible. If you want other comparative analysis between us and other clubs with total number of try-scorers or anything else, also ask.

  • Maybe a comparison between how the teams went in the 9s compared to the regular season?

    • Broncos were in the Nines GF in 2014, finished eighth & were knocked out first week of the finals.
Cowboys won the 2014 Nines comp, finished fifth & and were knocked out in the semis.

Warriors made the semis of the 2014 Nines, but finished ninth in the NRL season.
Sharks made the semis of the 2014 Nines, but ended up with the wooden spoon in 2014.

Panthers lost in the quarters of the 2014 Nines, finished 4th in NRL season & were knocked out in prelims.

Rabbitohs were knocked out in quarters of 2014 Nines, finished 3rd in NRL season & won the premiership.

Eels lost in quarters of 2014 Nines & finished 10th.

Knights lost in quarters of 2014 Nines & finished 12th.

Storm didn't make it past pool stage of 2014 Nines, finished 6th in NRL season & knocked out in 1st week of finals.
Dragons didn't make it past pool stage of 2014 Nines & finished 11th in NRL season.

Raiders didn't make it past pool stage of 2014 Nines & finished 15th in NRL.

Titans didn't make it past pool stage of 2014 Nines & finished 14th in NRL.

  • I find the 9's boring with almost NO coverage.

Means Jack Chit to anything except to get a few players injured.

So what is a bonus try, or bonus points for?

Like comparing a test match with a 20/20 imo.

That said - still love your work Ricky.

    • A bonus try is five points instead of the usual four points for a try.
There's a bonus try zone underneath the posts. Anywhere outside of that zone is a normal four-pointer.

      And cheers, Col.

  • We also picked up some major injuries with Edwards season, Taka leg which he carried throughout the season & Sandown ankle.

I would rather we do like the Broncos and choose the minimum allowable amount of first graders.

Guys like Shulte, French, Folau, Hasson ect.
    • Chief, all teams have a quota of top tier players that they have to choose from. It's compulsory.

The Broncos 2014 team had the likes of Thaiday, Gillett, Barba, Hoffman, McCullough, Hunt, Granville, Copley, Parker & Glenn.
So they picked their fair share of top-line, experienced first-graders. They just didn't have any injuries.

  • I'll add to these stats from this year's comp, and then provide a post-tournament analysis of it all.

I'd expect Semi to continue his try-scoring form & end up with a few more tries.

And he may well extend the margin in terms of his total points between other players, given Nabuli's departure to Union.

  • Thanks Ricky, im really looking forward to this come season proper, thanks for your efforts, i gotta be honest im not to interested in the 9s but these sort of stays will be great come round 1, i think it adds a lot to the site, cheers

    • S'all good, Snake.

Yeah, it's probably not the stats that everyone wants to see but it's a good indication of where we've stood in the Nines and who has been a standout for us.

  • Cool stats I can't wait for the nines

We got great seats and my parra suit is ready to go happy days then nfl super bowl in a bar all Monday morning in Auckland good times

Hopefully we can pull a upset at $12 to take it out
