Now for the Assistant Coaches

I think we pay far too much attention to the head guy. Whether it be your Chairman, CEO or head coach. What's more important is the team as an entity. Just like having a star player in your side, who doesn't have the right players along side them, to be honest I'm far more interested in the team of people being put together. From a coaching perspective, that's coming down to your assistant coaches.

One of the most important things about being in a lead role, is being self-analytical and honest enough to know where your limitations lie, what things you're not good at, and then to hire around that basis. So as I said elsewhere, I think who Brad Arthurs brings on board as his assistant coaches will have a massive bearing on his ability to succeed and out future fortunes as a club.

And this is where the GMF role becomes important. Daniel Anderson has to be deeply involved with these decision, as one of the benefits of this role is you can help the coach see things like where they need help so you don't get the situation where a head coach just makes appointments more related to who they're mates with, etc, but rather genuine strategic appointments that will result in us fielding a great coaching unit.

I've said this elsewhere - that I see Brad Arthurs strengths as being he is tough and likes discipline, yet still manages to maintain the respect of the players. That means he's a great man manager and the Manly players have raved about his abilities as a defensive coach. So to my mind that means he needs people who are going to be attack-oriented and I'd really like to see us come up with someone who knows how to work with halves - as that's the area of our side where we obviously have the biggest issues.

I'm actually more on tenter-hooks about these appointments. To me Arthurs and Taylor both had very different pros and cons - both needed assistant coaches to complement their pretty obvious weaknesses.

Who do we feel are the best candidates for the job. I'm looking straight to Andrew Dunemann, as a half himself and given Canberra's fantastic track record of producing talented halves.

  • Duneman and Price. Duneman because he can produce talent and price to get the passion and the players heart in the game

  • Bert Kenny and Ray Price they both got a BIG HEART and PRIDE for our club

  • Andrew Dunemann would be a good coup.

    • Dunemann is looking for a head coach's role. I'm tipping North Qld.

  • Has anyone else heard the whispers about Naythan Cayless being considered as an assistant? I have nothing more solid than friends at Manly hearing that amongst conversations about BA's future. Just wondering if anyone else had heard similar.

After serving the Parramatta Eels as player, captain and corporate sales Manager, Blue and Gold great Nathan Cayless is excited to step into his first foray as SG Ball Assistant Coach in 2014.

Since coaching the Wentworthville Under 7’s back in 2001, this is Nathan’s first coaching appointment here at Parramatta.

“It was something that I thought when I first left that I wouldn’t get into, but being out for three years I’ve had a bit of interest in it.”

Cayless says it will be a good experience for him stepping into the coaching role.

“It’s a way of dipping my toe in the water and see if I like it," he said.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve done a bit and really enjoyed it so far. It’s a good opportunity of getting to know some of the good young kids coming through our ranks.”

Having trialled over a thousand young players, Nathan says the talent out there is amazing.

“I was very impressed, especially with the size. The kids coming through now are getting bigger and bigger. So much power, so much pure skill. Obviously they’ve learnt these skills at a much younger age,” says Cayless.

“Their training levels are so much more advanced because of the training level they are receiving at the club.”

As a football player, Cayless says the focus of SG Ball is on the development of the players, to work out when they will be ready to play for the NRL.

“It’s great to get good results for the SG Ball but at the end of the day it’s about trying to fast track and get improvement out of these young kids.”

“It’s all about forward planning. Things are going well off the field for the club. The sky is the limit for our great club."

Cayless will be working with head coach Mark Mahoney and assistant coach Michael Withers.

This season the SG Ball side made it to the semi finals but Cayless has already been told that they are expected to win in 2014.

    • He wont be the last ex player appointed as an coach or assistant somewhere.
      Just wait n watch.
