The PS4 is more powerful and in side by side comparisons on the net the ps4 has better detailed graphics so if you are going on performance keep the PS4, its not a huge gap but if you are trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of a console keep the PS4
If you are going on library and exclusives well thats a different story, that comes down to personal preferance.
I basically only play sims like Project cars, Sebastien Loeb Rally, Dirt Rally, WRC, F1 2015, and the odd shooter, Racing games perform a lot better on the PS4, thats accepted as fact on the SIM forums where i get a few of my set ups from, they know a shit load more than i do about it.
Mate go down to the cupboard on the bottom of the main page, theres a few guys there who are right into both xbox and ps4, they will be good to have a chat to.
What sort of games are you playing and why do you want to change?
The new PS4.5 is coming out soon, that might be something to think about.

Hey joe, if you want to buy a game that will freaking blow you away, and your son, go out and grab a copy of Dirt Rally, it was released a few weeks ago, knocked the division off top spot in sales and is a breathtaking racing game, you guys are missing out big time if you dont buy it, its also just got the higest ratings and reviews of any console racer in history.
You guys could sit down together are smash out stages, its got cars from the 60's to present and the handling and physics is outstanding, its universally accepted as the greatest rally game along with Richard Burns rally, it not an easy game but its an absolute must if you have a ps4, theres a good chance Joe that you will like it more than your lad lol, youll be fighting over the console.
Make sure you grab a copy of Project Cars too, best looking SIM on console, its cheap now, like $30 and its the only one on ps4 that has Mt panorama, freaking great game, its like watching bathurst on TV the graphics are so good, if you get 2 racers, DR and Project cars are the way to go.
Regards to your boy, tell him im a big fan of his old man, he's a lucky boy.
