No Referees!

Some months back I postulated the possibility of removing referees from Rugby League. The emergence of players wearing GPS chips makes it possible--with computers--to know where all players are on the playing field at any time. I suggested at the time that a system of infa- red wireless along with footballs that reflect infa-red (as used in TV remotes) could determine where the football was at any time. Combine those two technics and there is no need for a referee! In todays Telegraph there is an article revealing that a company is to produce footballs containing GPS chips as the player would where. Thus, the technology is approaching the era of no referees. This is my idea not the company concerned but it will be a matter of time before it is latched onto.

Rugby League would improve with the abolition of referees and the game controlled by computer programmes. The worst aspect of Ruby League is the contentious decisions (sometime called 50/50`s) by the human referee. There would be no such thing with the technology envisaged.

I urge all fans to support the abolition of referees, replaced by GPS technology and computerisation.

  • So how does a computer adjudge the wrestle in the ruck as to what constitutes a player throwing himself to the ground or a defender making a second effort? If you've paid any attention to the DRS use in cricket you'll notice that a computer is not infallible and that technology can get it wrong with so many human facets involved in a game.

    •  Are you suggesting that the existing system is infallible? If you eliminate the human facets, as you put it, you eliminate the errors, which is the point of my suggestion. Well how is the wrestle adjudged now? According to the recent coaches meeting its not adjudged at all! Bennett, and others, want it eliminated. so it may not even be there soon. But if it is, it can easily be adjudicated on the basis of time.

  • What happens if there's a system crash?

    •  I have a revolutionary answer to that---we have a back up!

    • what about a black out? Or a electrical storm?

    • What about when computers become self aware and take over the world by eliminating mankind?

Don't say it won't happen, because i saw it in some doco i was watching.

  • Each team could just field their best video game players and they could use a PS4 or xbox to play against each other on the NRL game, then you wouldn't need to shell out all this money on players and stuff.
    • Hahaha that's exactly what Robert is trying to say. Stay away from the games Robert they kill brain cells.
    • Hayne believes he would be good at that.
  •  You are speaking from experience I take it.
