Newcastle shopping Klemmer and Frizell, do we buy in?

There are three positions of need for us in 2023; bench middle forward, a back-rower and a centre. There are two of those available for 2023. If Newcastle are looking to offload them, you would imagine it is like Penrith with RCG and Blake where they pitch in for a bit of the deal. Newcastle want Brooks and that is what has stalled Wests getting Klemmer as they want to swap.

Do we go for either of them? Klemmer would be a huge coup; can play Prop and Lock, has aggression, has experience in big games through rep level and 2014 GF appearance. Is he hard to coach? Maybe, he seems set in his way playing, not sure how he would be taking a role behind RCG and Paulo, though i think most games he would start at 13, like Niukore did and rotate between Prop and Lock. He is exactly what we are missing, especially off the bench. I think a coach like BA too would be able to tame Klemmer.

Frizell not as much of a need but could still use him. Murchie and Hopgood are good pick-ups but Frizell at 12 and having Murchie and Hopgood on the bench rotating would make us even stronger. Frizell is a natural leader, Origin and Test experience. Only thing with Frizell is father time is fast approaching, but he may have two or so years left to give.

Coming into the 2022 NRL GF, leaders was something we were lacking, when looking for direction you had Paulo who is a lead by example player and Gutho who can get flustered easily. Adding Hodgson and say a Klemmer will do wonders for our leadership group. Hard nosed approach, do whatever it takes approach. Hodgson and Klemmer are players that at times can sort of do their own thing, but they have the confidence and leadership to do it and at times do it well. That is what we need in this team, risk takers and someone to say "F*** this" and just change up the tone of the game. Whether it is a 40/20 or movement around the ruck from Hodgson, or a big hit or run or simply annoying the hell out of a player from Klemmer.

Do we sign one of them? If i had to put money on it, i doubt it, i think Taupau is the one we are signing so that fixes the middle forward issue. But Klemmer would be nice, Frizell also would be a nice addition.

  • Id take frizell, can slot straight into papalii's position.

as a bench forward, id be going for tapau

    • The thing with a bench middle for us is they would be swapping with Matterson throughout the year from starting to bench. Taupau suits both, being able to start if needed, but also able to make an impact off the bench.

      • Agree. I dont think klemmer will be happy with a bench role where Tapau knows this is his way to continue his nrl career

        • Klemmer should be able to play 13

  • I'd be looking at both. Knights will be paying some of their contracts

  • Tbh pass on both. Murchie will become a good back rower or hopgood. Spend the money on a centre

    • Agree both would asking for overs I think we need another prop

  • I'd be signing both. Also, sign Taupau and F.Brown for cheap and we have a better side than last year. Both Klemmer and Frizell are victims of playing in a shit team, if they came to us they'd be elite again. A side of:

    1. Gutherson
    2. Sivo
    3. Simonsson
    4. Penisini
    5. Blake
    6. D.Brown
    7. Moses
    8. Campbell-Gillard
    9. Hodgson
    10. Paulo
    11. Lane
    12. Frizell
    13. Matterson
    14. F.Brown
    15. Hopgood
    16. Taupau
    17. Klemmer

Is hands down the best team in the comp imo. This team can definitely beat Penrith

    • That's a premiership team right there , but I'd be bringing Dunster in somewhere.

      • Yeah for sure that's a premiership team 100%. Waqa and Dunster will battle for that wing spot in the off-season I think.
