  • No chance. The NRL is not about to put a club in a city that averages 8.9 violent crimes per 100 people. Not to mention the climate is just unacceptable for rugby league.

  • Be a huge ask.

  • I think it will be great for New Guinea emerging players and fans . They will be passionately playing for tribalism and a cultural identity in league which will take a little part of the game to our roots when  foot ball origins started around local community identity. Their fans will go crazy with any wins they get and create some great atmospherics which will be great

  • The issue with having Papau New Guinea or a Fiji, Somoa and Tongan team, like Matty Johns has mentioned, in the NRL is more of an issue that the Warriors are currently having. What i am saying might sound racist but i am trying not to be, but the Warriors for years have been told to have more Australian's in their team, journalists have said it also from time to time, more so to lead culture. Not me it was brought up years ago.

Can you imagine these teams in PNG, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa trying to attract players to live from Sydney or Brisbane or Auckland to those countries? With all due respect it is not the same Australia or New Zealand to live in. Especially PNG which has a massive crime rate, ask Hannah Hollis who did a story about how she live there when she was younger and a few times her family were held at gunpoint.

I would love to see these countries feature in the NRL but i just do not think it is realistic and will be more of a headache, if a club is coming into the NRL they need cash behind them, will these countries have it or rely on the NRL after so many years.

Instead i think they should do more to get juniors in those countries over to the NRL, set up development for younger players in those countries and have them signed by NRL clubs for opportunities, for every Maika Sivo one falls through the cracks or goes to Union, we want the ones that go to Union and who fall through the cracks.

Sorry this response is long but hear me out, Matty Johns said for years the next team should be a Pacific Islands team for Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. I disagree as that is a logicistical nightmare, where will you play home games when split between three countries? who is funding it all, where are the players based, you have one team getting majority of the games and training and the other two twiddle their thumbs in jealousy then leads to in fighting etc. Plus trying to attract players would be not ideal.

I like the NRL thinking of a Wellington based team called the South Pacific Orcas, it links in with Matty's idea but based in Wellington and closer to those islands for them to use as a junior base, Wellington is very financial also. South Pacific or Perth are the options

    • Wellington would also create a NZ derby which would generate more interest in NZ. If they can have an A League team, in a country where football (soccer) isn't even a popular sport, then surely an NRL team would work there.

    • I can't understand the culture aspect of having "more Australians". What's the theory behind it?

The All Blacks don't have any Australians and they go pretty good.

  • Great stuff, huge fan of PNGRL.

Really enjoy watching highlights on youtube of their local games, they only know one way to play, and thats extra hard.

Id love to see a PNG side in the nrl but not sure theres the money there to get them over the line in comparison to bigger bids.

One things for sure, they'd pack out every game in PNG.

  • As Gus Gould would say... no, no, no, no, no!

It's the National Rugby League, not the International Rugby League. We already have too many international teams and the pandemic has shown, if nothing else, what disruption global instability can cause to the competition. The NRL needs to stay just that, National.

Other than adding some TV revenue in NZ, the Warriors have been an abject failure and have only been successful with a good proportion of Australians in the team and an Australian coach.

  • Shame about the logistical and other issues.

A team from PNG would have been great for RL there.

  • Unfortunatley the proof this won't work is in the evidence available already.  2021 QLD Cup results, the PNG Hunters finished 10th from 14 teams (6 wins / 11 losses).

Albeit as an NRL team they MAY be able to bring some NRL quality players back like Justin Olam....OR conversely NRL quality PNG players keep looking for an opportunity to NOT live in Port Moresby, so they a PNG based team could struggle to maintain an NRL standard team.

Maybe if they were based in Cairns for training and played home games in Port Moresby, they could have a shot, but that also defeats the purpose of a PNG team.

I just don't think it would work.
