New Double Try Rule

NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett believes the "double try" could be a part of rugby league within five years. The NRL and Indigenous All Stars will be able to opt for an extra tackle, rather than a conversion, following a try in an attempt to score four extra points when they clash on the Gold Coast in February.http://www.nrl.com/newsviews/latestnews/newsarticle/tabid/10874/newsid/57339/double-try-has-nrl-future-bennett/default.aspx

  • I'd like to know more about this.
It's an option in the NFL. You can kick for 1 point or try for a 2 point play by scoring another touch down. It makes it interesting when a goal will tie the game but 2 points will win it.

What happens with the 'second' try if your scoring attempt is intercepted? Can the other team score a try of your try opportunity or would an intercept mean the end of the play? I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like on Feb 13.
    • yea that's a great question, I have no idea, in my opinion i think the play should end because it is unfair, like they scored the try they shouldn't deserve to get it taken away. But it could be interesting to allow it. It could be aprt of the risk in going for the try.

So yea we will wait for more info on it, but yea excellent question.
      • But if you've taken the risk with the benefit of extra points, you have to concede that if you stuff it up, you may help the other team. Really no different between choosing goal or try attempt of a penalty. I don't think you can just shut the play down that way, it would become too disjointed and impacts on one of the advantages of RL in the way it flows compared to a lot of other football codes.
  • This rule could be interesting in a close game but in blowout results instead of it being 40-6 it may end up 70 odd to 6, not a good result overall for the game of rl. Leave it alone, it would make those side line conversions less of a feature.
  • Yep think i agree with you Nick.Parra
  • hows this work? if you score a try you get option of conversion or another tackle to score again? if that the case after you score the first try does the defensive team kick off from half way or does the attacking team get given the ball on the 20m line or something? i personally don't like this new change. leave the game as it is!
    • thats what i want to know? surely they wouldnt kick off from half way coz this would mean the attacking team has a very slim chance of scoring.
maybe a tap from the 20m line? or maybe a line drop out?
will be interesting to watch in the indigenous/aus match but i believe its a bit bogus to introduce it into the nrl at this stage.
  • Bullplop idea in my opinion. If I wanted to see this sort of stuff, I would tune into FOX to watch the Jets v 49ers. When are we going to stop turning our game into the NFL? Whats next? Will we have a defending team seperate to our offensive team??
  • No one would take the option, unless you desperately need an extra two points at the end of the match and then we're just rewarding teams who probably don't deserve to win.

If you look now, teams almost aways take a penalty and thats when they have six tackles and control of the ball. To sacrifice the chance of a relatively easy two points to score on a hail mary try would be stupid.

And what play would teams goes for 80 per cent of the time. Cross-field kick for the wingers. Hardly adds any more excitement.
    • the article also said you can't kick on that extra tackle so it would be hot potato with the ball.
