I think a lot of people are of the belief that because we've signed players that have previously been in the news for the wrong reasons or just haven't been performing, that they can't come good.
That's false, and they can.
Carl Webb for example is a man who is eager to repay the faith that the Eels have already shown in him.
Shown the door by Nth Qld, the Eels made a play for him, and he seems legitimately happy and pleased with the direction the club is going, and how his own performances are going.
He looks like he's already shed some weight, which shows that he is willing to put in the hard yards for the club under the direction of Hayden Knowles, and I think he'll only improve and become a fitter, stronger and more destructive Carl Webb than in previous years.
For Reni Maitua, if you want to see determination, you only need to look at this guy.
Yes, he was banned for using Clenbuterol, but he hasn't let it stop him from training at a phenomenally exhausting rate, highlighted by the fact that he has gone to the Thai jungle to secretly train and be put through rigorous and grueling training exercises, so that he can be in prime shape for when he makes his return in May.
In the case of Chris Walker, he has turned his life around, and you can see that clearly.
The man has three kids, so he's been given several kicks up the backside.
He's got the experience, and given his reversal, I think he along with our other experienced backs, he can actually be a good mentor to guys like Jacob Loko and Ken Sio, as they too aim to feature at some stage.
We have some solid depth all over the park, and that can only be a good thing, as the competitiveness for spots will be prevalent.
I will feel sorry for players like Robson & Humble though.
Robson probably should be released and Humble maybe given a chance off the bench as he has the speed, size and skills of Kurt Gidley when Kurt Gidley was good.
I must say that we have a massive squad of players where a lot may not make the cut.
The team reads (WITH ORFORD / WITHOUT BLAIR): HAYNE, BURT, REDDY, TAHU, GROTHE, MORTIMER, ORFORD, SMITH, HORO, HINDY, POORE, MCGUIRE, MANNAH, MOI MOI, SHACKLETON, MITCHELL & WEBB
The reserve team reads: LASALO, HUMBLE, KEATING, ROBSON, WALKER, MAITUA, MURRAY, OHANLON, LOKO, AITKINS, ROGERS, MANUOKAFOA & PELETELESE
Oh dear, a lot of headaches! And maybe dissatisfied players.
Getting players in the 25 we know have been there, done it and as long as we keep them fit and fighting can help us out and just do the job effectively.
Keep in mind all three have cost us sweet shit all and Parramatta might just be sick of bringing up junior after junior prematurely and then having clubs like dogs, sharks, eagles ect throw big money at them straight away and forcing us to either loose them or risk signing them for alot more than they should be valued at, at the current time and risking there promise not being lived up to. Something alot of our juniors seem to do whether its due to our coaching staff or themselves personally.
ALso keep in mind in regards to Matt Orford that our 4 signings in Webb, Maitua,Walker and McGuire have left us with room to still bring down JT from the cowboys for 2011. An ongoing process as we speak.
OR bring out Matt Orford for a year.
Orford is still not a done deal parra will only sign him if Cowboys officially deny us the JT release. If JT was never going to happen we would have already signed Orford by now.
C Webb has been in the ear of some of his NQL buddies since coming to Parra.
ALso SK relationship with his Kiwi players wont do us any harm.
