Need Speed? Don't use Speedsters well?

I have used the data from the NRL Testra Tracker to compile some stats. The results show the fastest players in 2020 (top speed). Eels and Broncos are the only 2 teams to have 3 players in the top 15 for 2020. However, this is only a measure of top speed rather than acceleration which is more important in the NRL. I think us or raiders have the fastest pair of halves.

So I thought of creating this because a few of us have started saying we need more speed in our outside backs.  Fergo and Jenko still have their acceleration whilst Blake is in the top 5 for fastest players this year albeit his defensive issues. Gutho has good acceleration and Sivo is not the quickest but apparently makes this up in strength, however he has not been showing any of this strength in games as he only makes 5m every times he gets the ball.

In attack, I was wondering if we use the speed of Blake enough. His speed is more suited to the wing position and also makes sense given his defensive issues and poor passing games. Blake also has good aerial ability and would be good for a short kicking game.

  • Left table is top speeds of 2020 for 35.0 km/hr and greater. This shows how consistently players hit this speed. Right table shows the fastest players of 2020 for 35.0 km/hr and greater.

  • Very interesting thanks for posting.

speed is one thing you can't coach but you can work into your plans I want to see waqa in open space more and I thing wing would suite him he has a habit of stepping in and trying to beat his man is like him to get outside of the defense and use his speed and strength.

Sivo very rarly gets into open space this year anyway and when he does he doesn't have a lot of top speed but that strength will definitely make up for it.

When you get a player with pure speed and football nous that's a gift you have to utilise

    • Sivo can never break tackles to put himself into open space. Only through the work of others Sivo will have a linebreak. I personally believe that Sivo doesn't run at full speed unless he knows he can score a try, because otherwise he lacks any effort.

      • Agree 100% with Sivo open line he can power but generally he doesn't show a lot in terms of speed. I think over time teams will kick early on him aswell he has shown a slow turn and chase especially during those wet weather games

  • Last year this was the top 10.8009311296?profile=RESIZE_930x

    • Similar players from 2019 top 10 and 2020 top 16 are Ado Carr, Papenhuyzen and Dufty.

      • For all the raving about how fast the Papsmear is he doesn't rate very highly at all.

However one of the problems with these stats is obvious to me - if a player is not getting the ball in space he could be "the fastest player on the planet" but never hit the stats sheet.

What ever happened to the old race day when the speedsters of the game went head to head over the 100 metres?

        • Papen has really good acceleration but his top speed isnt the best. And yeah, the likes of Field and James Roberts would be there if they had the chance to motor in an actual game.

          • Umm you been serious? Papen has great acceleration and top speed.

            • Paps  has great balance too. Even though he didn't tackle him Waqa showed some toe to reach him.
