Incoming Eels coach Jason Ryles has taken the first major step in his Parramatta rebuild, with a former NRL mentor set to join his coaching team in 2024. See the latest transfer news.
Jason Ryles has taken the first major step in his Parramatta Eels rebuild program by all-but securing former St George-Illawarra, Newcastle Knights and New Zealand Warriors coach Nathan Brown.
The pair played one season together in the Red V jersey in 2000 and Brown then coached Ryles between 2003 and 2008 when he was head coach at the Dragons.
Brown’s 475 games of head-coaching experience in the NRL and the UK Super League will be invaluable for Ryles as he sets about rebuilding the Eels.
He is expected to sign the deal in the next few days and be in charge of attack.
Brown has also been previously involved at Parramatta. In 2022 he was hired as coaching director of the club’s elite pathways programs.
He was there to oversee the emergence of young guns Blaize Talagi, Matt Arthur, Ethan Sanders and Charlie Guymer.
Brown may have lacked success as an NRL head coach but he is respected around the game for his shrewd tactical nous.
Ryles has also signed Scott Wisemantel, the former attack coach for the Wallabies and the England rugby union teams.
Ryles has moved on the Eels’ acting head coach Trent Barrett, who will be joining the Broncos under Kevin Walters.
The Eels head of high performance, Trent Elkin, is also leaving.

So that's Brown, Wisemantel and apparently Moa too? That's a lot of assistants.
Brown was here last year in charge of the youth setups and pathways wasn't he? MIght be signs there.....?
Dunno, all much of a muchness.
3 is about the right number. BA had three for some time. 2020-22 he had Carr, Kidwell and Murphy.
2 for attack and 1for defence including Ryles, Brown can also be that sounding board.
I can't say I'm excited about our assistant coaching staff. Oh well, time will tell.
ffs nathan brown a dope and a failed NRL coach....Who else dont tell me Paul Mcgreggor ....all the losers from a failed Coaching group at the Dragons......Lomax leave leave now
cmon its not April 1 is it ?
Makes you wonder why Barrett was on the outer , doesn't it.
Loserville..... imagine how much of an NRL coaching legend our bean counters must think Nathan Brown is if they rate Mark Oneill. They would be thinking they've landed a big fish if this is true.
Can't believe this if true. Unless he's overseeing something there. Or maybe Wiz it's the Nathan Brown who still plays NRL...?
Haha maybe . Look out all the lollipop men around Parramatta if it is.
That's it - shirts off firing up with Hayne in car. Who knows mate...I'd feel better if he was overseeing juniors etc.
I'd feel bettter if he was overseeing the waste management contract at the stadium.
