Nathan Brown

Hello all great to see the Eels get up 2 wins already for the year. Now there has been a fair bit of postage about Nathan Brown and him not getting back to us with our 600k offer and what that means, I feel as though that this is PERFECT. Too long we have been held to ransom by players and their yuck agents, 600k a year is AN AMAZING offer considering how mnay injuries and suspensions Brownie has had, I believe we do a hard stance and offer him $1.6m for 3 years, if he rejects there are a few options I can see happening that will benefit us as a club.

1. Billy Magoulious - this is a player of pure silk, grit and needs to be playing first grade. Would offer him 400-480k and potential to be a starting 13.

2. Kotoni Staggs - we have already played and won plenty of games without Nathan Brown already, lets use his 600k to up our offer to Staggs, we wants to play 6 for titans for 700k? Come contend for a premiership at right centre for Parra for 750-800k you beautiful human.

3. Upgrade our exisitng stocks, let Brown go and wait pateintly for the right opportunity, players like Nuikore and Papalii can play 13.

I dont see any good coming with getting into a bidding war for Brown, we are in the perfect postion to negotiate on our terms, I think with Browns $$ we can really look to strengthen areas we need, I am having serious doubts over Waqa Blake, Blake Fergy ect I dont see these type of players bringing the winning culture we are begging for to win a premiership. All in all I would like Brown to stay but nothing more than 580k.

  • Who says we are getting into a bidding war for Nathan Brown ?

Besides, it's not the annual salary that's the sticking point, it's the length of the contract. He wants 3 years, we're only offering 2. I would hate to lose him over one year. If it was money only, that would be different, but a 3 year or even 4 year deal for one of our key middle forwards at age 28 at 600k per year is I think perfectly reasonable. These are his peak years, all the time we've spent developing him has been for these years.

The club has got to be careful not to cut of its nose to spite its face.

BTW, if I have a choice of paying Brown 600k a year or Kotoni Staggs 800K a year, it's an easy decision. Brownie everyday of the week, and twice on Sundays.

    • How many of these blogs are going to keep repeating themselves,  let one player go and get a whole long lists of unknowns from other clubs, or some that will want more.  I completely agree with you have said regarding Nathan, if he goes elsewhere it will put a big hole in the forwards.

While I have said about having the Player option for a 3rd year term, I really don't see why the club cannot offer 3 year contract to him & like others that we have how many want to leave, I believe we are reaching the same level as other clubs who sign players who want to play at that club.

NB at $550. a year for 3 years, is not big coin and not much less for him than he wants, but it still is the length of the contract not the money that he is after. Like many other players at his age generally see that a new contract will likely be their last, & players like Nathan will give their all right up to the last minute of their last game.

      • It'll certainly be his last big contract, so understandably he wants to milk it for everything. If he was 30,31,32. then yeah you say to him, "sorry buddy, but 2 yerars is it", but 28, 3 years is not overs.

        • Simple yet true Brett. I Agree, although I don't think any of us, fans, teammates and coaching staff or the club want to see the end of each other just yet!

IMO, under BA's astute oversight we've managed to garner together a group of resourceful, experienced and skilful administrators, players and coaching staff that enjoy success and being around each other. Since 2014 the cultural expectations and standards in the club have grown exponentialy. We now have a clearly identifiable system of accountability permeating the club from the top down!

We, as a club are starting to resemble the top clubs who have become icons of success in our game. It's a process that takes time, the evidence of our successful adherence to and confidence in the systems put in place by BA and supported by the "Board in Administration" along with the early appointment of Bernie Gurr as CEO is now expressed in the loyalty shown by players, coaches and administrators towards one another.

          • Well that's it. I think if we look back in 10 years time, we'll come to the conclusion that 2018 was "the wooden spoon we had to have".

When the LC was in admin, the football club was stripped back to the bone and basically told to do as much as it could with as little resourcing as possible. Once the baseline was established, Max & Bernie set about laying down the foundations for consistent success and map forward.

They were the club's much needed change agents.

      • G'day Colin, I agree with your sentiments regarding this contract being "perhaps" his last. He will, imo honour the club, his teammates and the fans everytime he runs out in our colours because that's the sort of bloke he is.

All teams need quite achievers who let their footy do that talking. I'm sure BA puts a high value on Brownie, he not only identified him, but developed his game to where it is today. I'm sure Brownie puts a high value on that too!

It's nice to get to speak with you again Col, I hope all is well with you.

        • Thanks Rowdy, I would be very saddened to see Nathan go, no doubt it will happen one day but I believe he does have a V good 3 years left in him. He has settled his aggression to sensible levels which actually makes him a better player and reliable one at that.  His two game so far this year has seen him in the thick of battle, no sign of anything that can undo him, maybe the off season has spoken to him in a way that he can finally provide the team with the hard and controlled aggression that he has, and will not get him offside with the refs either.

I also think there are a lot of players in the game that are on more money than NB but nowhere near his abilities, would be a waste to lose him now, What Brett has been saying is also spot on.

Thanks for your thoughts mate, ageing and getting slower, but come to life a bit more when I watch the eels play, even though there are times I could easily throw a brick at the box, why I lock the doors and windows at game nights.

    • Agree with everything you say Brett

    • I also don't think we can believe everything we hear about these contract negotiations. The club won't be saying anything, so guess where all the goss comes from?

    • I agree with you Brett. Brown with the help of Beau Scott beang the mongrel  really were lacking for years. In 2018 Brown hardly played. Gutho came back from Acl injury. Eels get the spoon. Be dumb to let Brown go concidering  now he is part of the blues team. You keep your origin players and build a team around them. I love what papa does for the team. Remember papa has played two games. Brown been an important  cog for 4-5years. Wake up parra and fellow  eels fans!
