Moses managing troublesome calf

Parramatta Eels halfback Mitchell Moses has revealed he'll be managing his troublesome calf for the rest of the season after re-injuring it during his side's clash against the Canberra Raiders earlier in the season.

Moses originally tore his left calf during the lockdown period and despite recovering in time for the season resumption, re-aggravated the injury in the first half of Parramatta's round seven match against the Raiders at Bankwest Stadium.

The diagnosis was a slight tear to the scar tissue, a much better outcome than initially feared with his inability to put weight on his left leg worrying Eels fans that he'd either torn his Achilles or done serious damage to his calf.

The minor injury meant Moses spent three weeks on the sideline with the Eels winning two of those matches before returning to lead his side to victory against the Wests Tigers in round 11.

Speaking to NRL.com, Moses said he was 50-50 heading into round three.

"I tore my calf in the break and I was out for about six weeks. I was 50-50 going into that first game [in round three], pulled up all right, so I got through those games, and then just a bit of scar tissue popped again from the previous injury."

Moses and his Eels return to action on Sunday afternoon at ANZ Stadium when they face the Canterbury Bulldogs who are fresh off a scrappy win against a injury plagued Newcastle Knights.

  • Rest him for Doggies?

    • No he'll play unless there's a problem. They've been pretty careful with him so I'd say they'll just manage his training workloads and keep an eye on it. You don't want to be pulling your halfback in and out of the side constantly.

      • Thanks S'Super, not ideal to play despairs with our 7, just really need him for Sharks n Melb

        • Swapsies with our 7

  • Hopefully the 10 day break will work in his favour

  • I've torn a calf muscle, and it really takes 12 months to recover, if it was as bad as Mitch said it was. Most of the time its fine, but every now and then when you stretch out with the leg some of the scar tissue catches. They can be troublesome.

    • Yea I hear ya Brett, flare up when least expected, shit of an injury

      • Marty, mine is completely predictable. I can feel it getting tight, I know exactly the cues, and just stop running nowadays. I never ever push it. It took a while to admit to myself it could not be pushed. I think that was the real struggle, accepting I could not will my body past a tight calf if it flared on me

    • Me too. Not even a pun

Mine permanently altered the structure of the muscle, reducing its range. Total bummer. I have to wear compression sleeves on the calves when running because one is shorter. Moses will obviously get superior rehab, but still, an annoying injury

"Randy,  An interesting one.
I suppose coaches trust certain players or believe they're the best fit for the team, even if club form or a high minute count aren't there.
I'd choose you for x-factor even if you only had 5 minutes of form."

"Hoe, I dislike the idea that a player can be selected for Aust with only 480 club minutes on show...and not all of them good. How can he have form without playing?
Perhaps a rule that said 10 nrl games to be eligible for Aust would help everyone"
