Mortimer shouldn't be risked

As people who have been around here would know, I'm a HUUUGGEEE fan of Feleti Mateo at 5/8. I love having a big strong running guy at six, and I reckon you just have to look at the damage the John Sutton was doing towards the end of the season to see what an asset that can be. If I was selecting the team next year, Feleti would always be six, Mortimer seven and KK at 14. Whereas in the past we needed his go-forward in the forwards, I don't think that is the case anymore.Anyway, I thought I would declare that bias firstly, before saying, Mortimer absolutely should not be risked in the final. The last thing you want is someone who is not 100 per cent playing in a final. He's just not going to run freely and its an injury thats very easy to target. And let's face it, we don't lose much (and I would argue we gain - but lets leave that aside) from having Mateo at six. Jarryd Hayne plays like an extra playmaker anyway and kicks as well, so I'd argue when you have someone like Hayne at fullback, your ideal number six is a Mateo/Sutton/Anasta style player. That lets you fit another big forward in the pack and just makes you a more imposing side overall. The other point is, with Feleti at six we have no small men except for the reliable Jeff Robson to cover in the backline. I still have nightmares of 2001 when Newcastle went and won a grand final simply by running at Drew and Taylor and when it comes to these big games, the bigger the better. In summary, it would be nuts to play Mortimer this week. And I personally would like to see Feleti in six for the grand final as well - because god I would love to have the situation with Feleti marketing up to Finch.

  • Plenty of merrit to what you have said.

I think next year I would agree with Morts & Mateo in particualr with the ability to run another forward. I also still have nitemares in 2001 & Taylor.

But what we have done this year I would prefer to stick with Robo & Morts as a winning formula and not wanting to change anything now. Lets not forget that Mateo is still a bit of a lose cannon. (Silly pass options & defence)

I am prepared to back the judgement of Ando & Morts that if they believe he can play then he should be there. Lets face it I doubt that morts will be 100% fit even with needles but if he is 90% I would stick with Robo & Morts. Morts will need to be able to take punishemnt as they will test him. Its a lot harder to protect a hip injury then it is a Jaw as is the case with Noddy.

This is going to be a tough tough game. We are fatigued & have plenty of injuries. I just hope we have two games left in us. Hopefully Noddy will struggle which I hope this equals us up a little bit and with us haveing the momentumn, we smash them.

    Go Parra
  • Absolutely no doubt that if he isn't %100 he shouldn't play, as you said Mateo is an able replacement who would give us another dimension.

However I am not saying I don't want Morts to play, I am hoping that he gets himself fit for friday and atm it looks more than likely that he will be right. Last time we played the Doggies Morts had a blinder, and this game is even a bigger occasion if he could reproduce a great game again you could imagine the headlines the next day.

Mortimer deserves to be there with the way he has played this season, and Mateo can still come off the bench as a strike weapon.
  • bit more worried about our centres with Wright and Inu both looking unlikely, even if one can play ,their time will be limited I'm sure due to their injuries. So Smith to centre ,and Joe to second row ,leaves us a bit limited on bench if Morts out as well.Morts plays ,Mateo to Lock , Smith to centre, can Lowrie fill in second row?
  • I think Morts adds a great deal with his kicking game. Finally having a decent kicking game has made a big difference to us
  • of course we'd all love to have morts playing, especially with how he ripped up the doggies last time. but mateo really stepped up for us against the titans, n im sure he'd love to put those 'mateo to the bulldogs' rumors to bed. as for him possibly being a loose cannon, mateo only threw ONE offload the entire match. it shows that we've got enough offloads comin from our other blokes that mateo can focus on his strong running game, and throw the occasional offload when the oppurtunity is ripe. Also, the machine Todd Lowrie's been going to the bench to get feleti out there, i feel we'd do better with the Todd out there for the full 80 against a pack like the dogs..

so if we can get morts out there then sweet, but if we can't. well then we're not at too much of a disadvantage.. if the dogs lose kimmorley during the course of the match, they're much worse off.
    • With respect & valuing your opinnon.
I am not talking about 1 game here with Mateo. Mateo has a history. Its a fine line between stifling someone's game by berating them for throwing a pass & them then not having them confidence to offload in future. We need Mateo to continue with the offloads. This is a feature of his game. Not many people in the NRL can achieve the type of offload that Mateo can. It is a gift. But the position on the field and the critical time of game is the very essence of the problem. Mateo has got to learn when to hold the ball. I think it is a maturity thing with Mateo & with two games to go I would be concerned about having Mateo playing such a critical role. I have said I think Mateo & morts as half's is our best option for 2010. I'm not convinced about this for 2009. When I mention Daniel at 90% that is a loss of 10% due to no training & requiring needles. If we can get morts out there, I think that is the best option. If we cannot get morts out there then no doubt Mateo is our man.

If you remember early blogs I am a Mateo fan. I just don't want too much change now. Robo & Morts have been awesome & Mateo has even been better as a impact player. Mateo is a freak & is a game breaker.
      • Yeah, well Morts is in. I think he's a bit steadier as play director. Feleti will be good as well.
  • I think the mind games have started!!! They will give him till kickoff to prove his fitness then I can almost bet he will be pulled and Mateo will take his spot!!!!
  • well mortimer has already made it clear that the one thing that he does not want to do is be a liability to our team. so yeh for him to play i think he would have to be close to 100%.

as for mateo, i think we are a much better team with him and mortimer in the starting side. give feleti his number 13 jersey back if morts is fit.

b.smith to the bench then we have some fresh legs late in the match.

it would be nice to know that either inu or wright are 100% to play. its a scary thought to think that they might both be injured, especially with the quality of the bulldogs centres
  • Has everyone forgot the Mateo magic he produces , as good as mortimer is , id rest him feliti will do the job , he i bigger than mortimer and has more experience against him . let mateo ,reddy, smith, and fui target kimmorley and ennis . we must out muscle the dogs for 80 mins so id go and put an all forwards bench for this one. guys like smith and mateo ,burt can move around as needed. Keep mortimer for the GRAND FINAL
