More to be released to accommodate Jennings supposedly

Eels release Pauli and more set to followNewcastle have signed Parramatta prop Pauli Pauli for the next two seasons after he was released by the Eels in a bid to ease salary cap problems following the blue-and-gold signing of Michael Jennings. And he may not be the only player to be exiting Parramatta, with centre Ryan Morgan linked to a possible move to Melbourne Storm and Junior Paulo targeted by Canberra. The Saturday Telegraph understands Pauli has been on the Knights’ radar since before Christmas with coach Nathan Brown keen to bolster the size of his forward pack.Pauli made his NRL debut in 2014 and has played 33 NRL games to date with the Eels.Read more at http://www.zerotackle.com/nrl/eels-release-pauli-and-more-set-to-follow-20414/#Cpbuogif8EaOK4Kf.99

  • I think it'll be more to keep players coming off contract
    • Yep Norman, Peats, Paulo etc
  • But but Sharpie said............
  • Supposably.
  • Agree Wiz.

I was just about to send you a PM regarding another blog but you logged out, anyway Thanks for the logic, it was refreshing after reading every other post.

  • Why would Melbourne want Morgan?
  • Pure speculation.
Although the scum can have him.
  • The original article on daily telegraph says "Joseph Paulo" instead of junior Paulo. How can you trust anything in the article when the writer can't even be bothered to get the name right.
  • Wouldn't like Morgan released until had more depth in centre position. Get rid of Toutai by all means (not top 25) so no change to salary cap.

You have to realise when acquired Jennings the 25th person dropped off roster so our cap may be as follows:

    Jennings                          $500k

    Less: 25th player $150k

    Pauli                    $200k  $350k

    Amount to find                $150k*

"However, by releasing Pauli another player comes onto roster so if his salary is $100k we have to find $250k. Releasing players only works if their replacements that come into top 25 are paid much less.

    • The bottom player in the top 25 would be on close to minimum salary ($82.5k), and there would actually be half a dozen blokes in the top 25 earning about this much, plus the players outside the top 25 would be on about this much as well.

What this means is that whoever is released from the top 25 will free up his salary minus minimum salary, so if he's on $150k he will be replaced by another player on at least $82.5k, meaning less than $70k is freed up. Clearly then, releasing a player (unless he is on hundreds of thousands of dollars) isn't intended to free up much cap space, but rather to promote a second tier player into the top 25. This is why Pauli has been released, not to pay for Jennings but to bring a second tier player into the main salary cap. That could be King or Alvaro or even Kelepi Tanginoa. But it'll surely be someone who Arthur was intending to play more first grade than Pauli anyway.
