Mitchell Moses - Plenty of Razzle, Not Enough Dazzle!

I’ve always been a supporter of MM, even last year when he was getting bagged out. I’ve always made excuses for him, the forwards aren’t laying a platform, our 9 is too slow, no one is supporting him, Corey Boring is too lazy to keep up with his ideas, he’s still young and will learn and become a star. ... Yada yada yada ...

Trouble is there is always excuses but at the end of the day, or game, as Gus put it in the post match TV Hoohaa, at some stage your big money players need to stand up and take control of the game. Like Tedesco did. That run and change of direction that put  Siosiua away was a perfect example of what MM doesn’t have.

Michell has plenty of Razzle, he’s always pointing, shouting, buoying or berating, and seems to have a pretty endless fuel tank. There’s a lot of things he does right. He gets that bossy look you want in the chief playmaker. He’s quick on his feet and always 100% focused on the game.

What he doesn’t seem to have is the ability to see a few moves in front of the play, set up an attack, draw in defenders and get the ball in the right place at the right time. He doesn’t seem to have the ability to place a 5th tackle kick perfectly to keep the pressure on. Often it’s the opposite, the grubber  that falls to short, the high ball when there is no chance of a try straight down the throat of the full back. The ability to dazzle the opposition with double pumps, dummies and direction changes etc that can open up a hole for runners. That’s something that can’t be coached in to someone at his age. I hope I’m wrong, but up to this point he just doesn’t seem to have the smarts to do it.

A lot of halves get better and better as they age. That’s because their smarts are a bigger asset than their athleticism. When you look at the last few seasons of JT, he was nearly hobbling around the field, but his mastery of game and organisational skills still won a lot of games.

We had the Rorters on the ropes last night. Mitchels poor last tackle decisions let them back up.. That’s when a real big money star would have taken control and put the game away.

He’s not a rookie anymore. You can’t blame 18 year old Dylan. He sort of shows up MM if anything.

My question is, unless he develops those footy smarts real quick, as he ages and loses the Razzle, what will Mitchell Moses offer to the team to justify his pay and position?

  • Mistakes....We made too many mistakes.  The problem is we are getting habituated making mistakes and either pull up our hand or mumbling ourselves.

It Congress back to our coach.  He is just like zombies...

    No reaction nothing...

  • 1st off I would like to say the team played really well. Moses defended well and played well in the structured play and yes Dyln Brown made a couple of errors but it is his 1st year in the NRL but he did out perform MM. He has a good head on his shoulders and will only get better. The only poor points is what you said, poor try line defence letting in soft tries and poor leadership from the dominant half. Moses should of taken control when the tide turned yet didn't. His kicks were poor, out on the full or straight to the winger or fullback giving our players no chance to put pressure on or like last night where it was to deep and Tedesco put 1 foot back in goal and caught it on the full. This is  the 1 thing with Moses where he continually fails and when he tries to take control he runs to much sideways running his support players out of room or throws stupid pass as he is not sure what to do. Other than that I can not see the roosters winning this year as the Bronco's, Souths and even cowboys have been the best teams out of the games I have seen and we will not win the dreaded spoon but will likely just miss the 8 or scrape in.

  • The run Moses did when he was stopped just before the line was the equivalent to any of Tedescos efforts on the night. Tedesco got a heap of praise by the commentators however for the most part of the night he wasn't setting the world on fire. He stepped up once his forwards got a roll on following an error just after our try. We don't drop that ball and I'm confident we win and Tedesco to that point would not have been even a mention for Daly m points.
A better comparison for Moses is Keary who was great last night. Keary has a better kicking game close to the line especially and his outside men are used perfectly.
Keary does have the advantage though of a 20 million dollar team where everyone in their backs and forwards pose a threat to the line which helps in creating mis-reads. Seriously their team is a joke and the fact that the NRL just turn a blind eye as they don't want to sort it out makes the punter hate them even more.
We are starting to see a good combination develop between Brown and Moses but it will take the best part of the year before we see the best of them.
The one who i thought went missing last night was Jennings. After a great first week he was nowhere to be seen untill the final 5 or 10 mins which isn't good enough for someone on his coin.

    • Jenni gs played well. His defence was outstanding. His attack depends on being fed the ball and young Dylan ran more than passed.

  • I have stopped being dissapointed by Moses. I now just expect him to make poor decisions under pressure and lament the decision to recruit him. He is rushed and panicky when playing at the line or kicking. My assessment of him is that he has the athletic ability to be brilliant,  which is why he can be brilliant at times. However, he does not have the mind to be an elite half.

That is why I have continually argued that Norman would have been the preferred half to stay.  Norman is cool under pressure and plays with time.

However,  if D Brown continues to develop the way he has, perhaps it won't be such an issue. I think Brown will be the conductor before too long, which will allow Moses to chime in and out with some brilliance when needed.

    • Norman is shit. End of story.

  • MM has started the year well. He's part of a whole new spine. The most pleasing thing has been his commitment in defence..both initial contact and covering from the inside. If he has consistency in his performance and continues to develop I'd have no complaints with him. He offers a lot more than some of the starting halves at other clubs. The NRLas a whole isnt exactly full of quality halves.

  • Personally id like to see Dylan play half and first receiver with MM playing 5/8. MM is excellent in space a little wider of the ruck. His defence has improved out of site.

    • That's what happened against the Roosters. Moses played wide on the right with Gutherson on the left. Brown was in the middle. But we also focused on the Chooks' right side defence, so our set ups were usually to the right.

  • We should be focusing more on the left. Sivo scored two . I would like to see him with more quality ball
