Mitchell moses kicking game

I just wanted to start off this blog by saying this is my first blog as I only been a one eyed eels member for a week. Have been a long time reader though.

Know to the topic I wanted to discuss. Moses kicking game at times have been down right horrible! For example last night instead of trying to force repeat sets or go for the longer kick he would just bomb it up.

Can someone please explain the reason for this tactic? It doesn't put much pressure on the opposition when you bomb it and it lands 20 or 30 meters from the try line.

In my opinion we need to bring in a halves coach like John's, Thurston or Cronk when he retires.

Please let me know your thoughts my one eyed brothers

  • He needs to go and not the right half we need. He doesn't have the good kicking game in him and can't seem to put that pressure on. He didn't even run the ball last night once I don't think. To much trying to be razzle dazzle instead of building pressure and playing to what's in front of him. I really hope we don't resign him. Need a good structured half back who will tell and push the boys around the paddock.

  • Welcome aboard Rusty, good first blog, halves and their progression into better players has been a sore point of Brads coaching, been saying for a long time we need a proper halves coach.

    • Thanks Snake. Isn't it interesting that most fans have seen some of the problems with the players performances and the coaching staff seem unaware or simply can't come up with the solutions.

I was once a fan of Brad Arthur but he has had plenty of time to build a team that is successful. I turn 30 in June and never seen Parra win a GF

  • You'd have to think he's being instructed to do it? It does seem an odd tactic though. It has rarely got a result, especially when kicked from around the halfway mark. He seemed to kick deep for the corners when we were ahead against the Tigers,  Bulldogs etc but when we are chasing points or even in a close game the old midfield up and under comes out!

  • My guess is it's a tactic to firstly not give away 7 tackle sets by kicking it dead and secondly to give time for the chasers to get down and pin the opposition down there end of the field, the problem is our kick chase is terrible.

  • Moses is a confidence (immature) player. When the team is under the pump, he is the one that needs to step up.

Bombing is only effective when there is an effective kick chase.

    He is essentially Norman 2.0.

  • Field position Rusty, a kick for repeat set means stopping it in the in goal area with chasers, to pressure the fullback and or score and or tackle the fullback. However you dont want to give a seven set tackle restart at the 20 metres for the opposition, if it goes out.

A kick into the in goal must be along the ground because you dont want a fullback to catch it in the in goal, once again a restart from the 20m line.

This type of kick then is used when inside the opposiiton 20m line so that you have more control over the kick and your own chasers are able to be onto the ball and or add pressure.

We had no field positon last night, in the second half i think the commentators nmentioned we only had 7 tackles inside the opposition 20m line, also our total possession was somethiongin the 30-40 %. which is terrible. We were also 10 all with 15minutes to go, and our team could even hold the ball. Most of Moses Kicks were from too far out for this type of kick to be accurate and effective, his high bombs were 1 of a couple of options left to him. He could have tried for the long range corner kick, ran it "which he did on only one occassion " . No matter which kick he chose he still needed the team to chase hard in numbers and they didnt. Plus the opposition team know that 99% of the time it will be Moses kicking and they rush him. It would be nice to have a 5/8 pivot that could take some pressure of Moses at times and at least have the defence in two minds as to where the kick may come from.

Perhaps he could add the flat kick to his arsenal where it floats around in the air casuing the full back havoc. Maybe a kicking coach top teach him is the right call.

    • You make some good points Blue eel. But from what I have noticed that's the only kick he will go for 99.99% of the time.

I like to be fair on players when giving my opinion but I think he needs help developing his game. He has potential but if doesn't improve we should move on as potential only gets you so far
