Lets put those missed tackles into context. As you know I am very sceptical about the accuracy of these type of stats. What constitutes a missed tackle? i.e. saw Moses bounce of a player effectively stopped him and two others complete almost simultaneously complete. Missed tackle.....not for mine, I am looking at missed tackles that cost us a line break, yes even a small line break.

This a good opportunity to clarify the meaningless of the stat the way it is recorded, by half time Knights had not had a line break. I am guessing by the end of the game that they generously may have had say 6........so using the logic of us missing 47 tackles how do you get 6 line breaks.

Put it another way if we missed 100 tackes and have only half a dozen line breaks against us what is the point of the stat? Now there is obviously going to be a disparity between missed tackles and line breaks, but those people that a disappointed by the 47, think again about the importance of that stat.

My main beef is how they record them, I suspect there is are beaurecratic minds at play, with that statisticians falling over each other record a missed tackle.

  • Terrible blog to be honest, we had a good win so there is no need to be negative.

    • The negativity is about the compilation and the value of these stats .......you either have a severe mental problem understanding something as basic as that message and there is no relationship with negativity from an "our team" perspective.....

Exploring that further would be an argument against negativity as a lot of people saw less merit in the win because of those stats..... Do you have any base understanding of the game John?

      • Judging by your comments and opinion, you don't have much of an understanding at all about the game Poppa, I'd be suprised if you ever actually played league.

I think it is time for a new hobby mate.......

  • Missed tackles stats are really only a general comparison guide. In almost every game if one side is missing 50 tackles and the other team is missing 20, the side missing 50 tackles probably lost the game.
At an individual level you need to look at the circumstances of each so called 'missed tackle'.
A simple anomaly is if a player bursts through a hole untouched, the defender who completely missed his assignment won't get a missed tackle registered against him because he didn't lay a finger on the player with the ball.

  • I was pretty surprised at the number of missed tackles.

I think the key stat from this game was line breaks.

    • Yes, I think you guys are agreeing with the point I was making.

That said I wrote the blog specifically to nullify a perception that some of our IEE colleagues seemed to think that we were unimpressive because we missed so many tackles.

Finally all statistics really need to be qualified in certain circumstances, i.e. the wing that scores long distance tries with speed obvioulsy gets huge metres run accreditation. Watching the game last night I could nothelp but thing that both Greig and Makatoa were making outstanding metres, many through post contact.

  • I have a similar issue with an aspect of the error. How many times do we see someone drop a ball because it was simply a very bad pass. Brown throwing a pass to Moses that landed at his feet, constitutes an error Moses. In regards to the missed tackles, most of the time is just an effective tackle, and the play pulls off to get back in line

    • Yeah, ineffective tackles is a more pertinent stat, we had 7 ineffective tackles, they had 25.

  • Stat's are a guide and most if not all coaches will have a staticition. Same as a try assist the 6 beats 2 players runs 50mtrs, passes to the centre who passes it to the winger to score. Centre gets try assist. But your right what constitutes a missed tackle. I watched the replay on kayo, thought there were 23 missed tackles.

  • There's line breaks and also tackle breaks. You can bust a tackle run metres and it's only a tackle break if you don't come through the other end.

If you fall off a tackle and someone else has to clean him up of course it's a missed tackle. Good teams take advantage of poor first contact and it needs to be fixed

Don't  forget the same people record all the stats but I guarantee that you'll struggle to find another game where such a dominant winner will have that many missed tackles. It is a concern
