No, I don't mean the most successful, unsuccessful coach in the NRL is returning to Rugby League. People within the Melbourne club are saying that if Bellamy was to leave on a reported $6 million contract for St George, that Cameron Smith could take over as captain/coach.

Bellamy is expected to announce his future within the next fortnight. If Smith was to take over as coach, he would be the first to do it since Wally Lewis led the Gold Coast Seagulls on and off the field over 2 decades ago.

Winning records for captain/coaches in Rugby League are slim indeed. Lewis won a poultry 7 matches from his 44 games as captain/coach of the Gold Coast, making SK look like a super-coach. Hugh McGahan coached Easts in 1990, winning 6 from 22, in 1979, Bob Fulton took the top job and won just 9 of 22 games and last but not least, the late, great Arthur Beetson was captain/coach of Easts in '78, he is the only captain/coach to have a winning percentage greater than 50%, winning 13 of 22 matches that season.

Times have changed and I don't think a player these days can do the 2 jobs. So much emphasis is put on player management, not overworking them and not stressing them out. Coaching is one of the most stressful jobs in the world and can have a negative effect on the team, given Smith is the hooker, if he isn't at his best then the team struggles. And what happens come Origin time? He won't be there for about 6 weeks in the season. They have assistant coaches for this situation and one of them needs to step up if Bellamy leaves.

I think Bellamy will go. He'll want to be remembered as a multiple Premiership winning coach who won at several clubs. Gibson did it and Bennett's done it. If Bellamy wants to be considered anywhere near them he has to try and win Premierships away from the Big 3 and be prepared to put his reputation on the line as Bennett has done with Newcastle.

  • It's not on the SMH's website nor The Australian's. Seems only The Tele are running this story. Hagan is the only one named in the articles I've read. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/players-back-cameron-smi...

  • LMAO Smith as a coach LMAO like having Humphrey B Bear as a talk show host-A snowball chance in hell LOL

  • These days, if a team is considering one of their players to captain/coach then there are some serious issues. Why can't an assistant take over? Surely they'd have more coaching pedigree than a player. Is the salary cap scandal catching up with them? Coaches don't want to get involved with the running of a cheating club?

  • Let it go son... Craig Bellamy doesn't play for Liverpool anymore!!

    • And Sturridge doesn't play for Chelsea anymore. In 2 games he's scored more goals than Torres has all year.

  • Sturridge..... pffffft we don't want him.... He's a hog! We're getting Falcao or Michu or David Villa.

Uh oh... did this blog just turn into.............

    • Only took Sturridge 7 minutes to score for his new club. How long did it take Torres? 9 months sounds about right.

      • I wont get stuck into Torres.. He came to Chelsea after suffering a nasty injury.. He'll never be the same player, but let's see if Sturridge gets anywhere near Torres' goal scoring record at Liverpool

    • As Capt/  Coach Schubert will no doubt take 30% of Smith's total contract under the cap giving the Scum an extra $300K in their cap.

      OR

      Smith will sign TWO contracts.
