Social key to Parra Eels' new comms boss

Parramatta Eels and League Club Head of Communications and Brand Joshua Drayton
When it comes to generating back-page headlines, few sporting teams in Australia can match the Parramatta Eels. It is not only one of the most well-supported National Rugby League clubs, but its' highly-charged boardroom politics and back-to-back “wooden spoons” have seen it garner more than its fair share of negative press in recent years.
Indeed, the week that its new head of communications and brand, Josh Drayton, started with the club in May, he walked into another back-page scandal with The Sydney Morning Herald uncovering alleged vote-rigging and fraud at the last club election and dubbing it “Parragate”.
Fortunately, Drayton’s readiness to deal with this level of crisis management had been well-honed after a decade at Optus, where he was corporate and government relations manager.
“I have certainly been able to draw on my experience in the corporate world to address some of the issues at Parramatta and it’s important for our communications department to ensure Parramatta is continually in the media for the right reasons,” Drayton said diplomatically.
A life-long Parramatta fan, Drayton said he’d been working with the club on a volunteer basis, and, in doing so came to develop a relationship with the club’s CEO, Scott Seward.
“Scott informed me that the club was looking at a restructure of its communications function and I applied for the job; it seemed like a terrific opportunity,” Drayton said.
The Parramatta Eels NRL franchise is actually held by the Parramatta Leagues Club, and a decision to unify its communications across the group prompted a restructuring and, subsequently, the search for a more experienced communications manager with a broader skillset.
“My role covers both the Leagues club and NRL club. I provide advice across the board, as well as managing our digital services, social media strategy, and marketing strategy,” he said.

Josh is the head of Parramatta's communications department. He came from Optus after spending some time working with Scott Seward as a consultant. Basically he controls all of the club's communications be it press releases, player interviews etc. Is that short enough for you Snake?
