I don't want to have this blog turn into part of the DCE circus. However, an important component of his contract was a TPA with Fox Sports. With Foxtel being a significant investor in the NRL, I feel uneasy about them being major players in securing the services of any player for a club. It smacks of favouritism and to my way of thinking, it is a major conflict of interest. We can probably only speculate about the players who have TPAs with media organisations and perhaps Channel 9 is more involved with this than Foxtel. I understand that players like to be able to have the opportunity to set up a potential career after football. But when you have media companies being the major investors in the game, to have such organisations assist a club with their recruitment is indeed favouritism.i think it's food for thought.

  • sixtiesboy, pointing the finger a TPA's conflict of interest is like worrying about someone who's committed a hit and run not wearing a seatbelt, in other words the politics and shady deals are rife and TPA's are just the tip of the ice (green) burg.

    • Yeah, try not to let it keep you up at night... I think it's just part of the game now.

    • We can choose to accept that it's just part of the game or we can continue to draw attention to it. I'll choose the latter.
  • Good point. I guess I'm just getting used to teams cheating the cap. Eg. Bulldogs, Roosters, Souths and Broncos with their incredible rosters. Oh, and Manly should probably be included too with DCE.

  • You mean like Channel 9s TPA with $BW?
    • When the league season launches, the NRL pick a player to be "the face of the game". How often do we actually see this person on tv compared to some other player?
  • Yes I agree sixties.
When I heard about the Fox and DCE deal I just thought..., "not another massive conflict of interest?" .
There are so many now I've lost count. Worrying indeed.
Let's wait until betting agencies sponsor players. Won't that be fun!
    • Well, betting agencies already sponsor half the teams (including Eels).

  • Maybe TPAs need to be attached to a player regardless of the club they are playing for.
    • But wouldn't the business paying the player have some kind of association with the team/ the location of the team?

For example, DCE was about to start meeting businesses which were presumably based around the Gold Coast (for 3rd party deals). Why would they want to pay him money if he's playing for a Sydney club?
