Do you guys feel the ugly falling out between Ryan Matterson & Madge Maguire, which saw Matto leave the Tigers. - will this situation have repercussions, and make the Club think twice about the prospect of handing Maguire the top job at Parramatta ?

Since then, we all know what went down with Matterson sitting out 3 matches rather than helping the teammates in the opening rounds of 2023.

Maybe Madge may have been correct about Matterson after all.

Here's the recap of what went down - Matterson vs Maguire

Medical not money: Real reason Ryan Matterson left Tigers

Eels star Ryan Matterson’s decision to leave the Wests Tigers for Parramatta was reportedly for medical reasons rather than money or a lack of premiership potential.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Matterson had a falling out with the club over the treatment of his injuries, in particular a concussion.

Ahead of his much hyped clash with his former club on Friday night it has been revealed that Matterson took exception to the way the Tigers and coach Michael Maguire viewed his injuries.

Matterson’s issues with the Tigers included: a disagreement over the way the club treated his recovery from a concussion, a belief he was pressured into playing a game just two days after being in hospital on a drip and indicating he wasn’t up for it.

He also took issue with Michael Maguire questioning his toughness, training sessions running over time, one of which ran 11 minutes past the scheduled finish time and a belief the Tigers weren’t looking after his body the way the Roosters did, forcing him to play underdone and fatigued.

Matterson debuted with the Roosters in 2016 before joining the Tigers in 2019 on a three-year contract.

However, he quit the club after just one season, with speculation rife he wasn’t happy with his $450,000 a season contract.

Earlier this week the Sydney Morning Herald quoted a Tigers insider as saying Matterson told the club: “You will never win a grand final – I want out.”

However the Eels denied Matterson ever made the comment.

It sets the scene for an explosive contest on Thursday night at Bankwest Stadium.

  • does anyone really think that the head coach gets along with all the players?

    • Its impossible given the amount of different personalities within each squad.

I'd go as far as to say many players hate their coach, assistants or even team mates..

    • Does anyone give a shit about Matto? Overrated and over paid. Need to go anyway

  • Yeah this went through my head when Madge was considered in that Matterson has a deal til 2026 here. Matterson i feel could be on a list of players a part of a cleanout, but at same time i would move on a few players before him and though his form has been average he has not been awful, actually defensively has produced some really good stats.

Now if Madge got hired, i do believe Matterson would want to go. As for is Matterson soft? Well i do not know, he can play tough at times too. But he has in the past put himself before the team, at times that is fine as i a firm believer in looking after yourself in the workforce. But also Matto has missed a fair few games throughout the years and BA did look after him. As for going over 11 minutes. I mean don't we all at some point work longer than we should?

Does this team need a bit more toughness? Well, mental toughness particularly. Can Madge strengthen that? Perhaps.

  • Matterson, Sivo and Lane are on the chopping block for mine. All on money that they aren't living up to. Need to reform the pack and bring in Liam Martin/Hudson Young type players.

    • I agree

    • Big D, we needed these types of players two yrs ago when Niukore etc left

      • The noise has started at Manly. Holding off on Seibold extension past 2025. BA has an income for 18 months anyway without having to work too hard for it. BA can spend some quality time with his wife and all kids for a bit. Then, I wonder if we might see BA and MA to Manly from 2026?

"Then again, how often do you see coaches change a winning team? In any form of the game? Very rarely does a coach make an unforced change to a team, if they do it is one change."

"Spot on Pops, Munster has had 16 and 15 runs in the two games.
His individual stats read quite well but he stifles the attack , often the ball dies with him.
You can't have 4 points of attack it becomes disjointed, 3 works well.
The Roos attack…"
