Matt Lodge ACL

Reports are that Lodge could miss the season with an ACL tear at training today.Broncos have enough quality forwards to cover for him , even with the departure of Gillet.or do they?Who cares? Not Parra related? Well that brings me to Parras Front row.We have lost Moreoa and Timmy who some may argue niether should have been in the middle anyway, so we have lost 2 and bought one with the addition of just RCG, then we have Jnr , Evans, Nuikore and The Polar bear. Those last three with perhaps the addition of a smaller utility or even Taka round out the bench rotation quite nicely as long as they all fire.An Injury or suspension and the chance that RCG reclaims his spot in the Origin team and then Kafusi steps up, next in line is Stefano. So if we lose two at once .Are we going to be okay?If Both Jnr and RCG are gone at once then Basically we are relying on two rookie props to hold it together along with Nuikore who is really an edge forward , Polar and Evans who both have suffered from inconsistency. Is BA taking a chance with an untested rookie as our only backup prop, shoild we have bought someone else? Should we give Timmy a call ? Should I stop worrying and accept that BA has it all figured out?

  • Although I don't rate lodge as highly as some in the media he is a solid player and last year was the broncos most consistent foward.  Haas and Fifita have enormous talent but lack discipline and consistency so it will definitely affect them and the remaining fowards both front and back row are very young and inexperienced.  Joe ofahengaue is likely  to miss a few early games for yet another drink driving charge as well.  It will give Pat Carringan a chance though and he might be better than lodge long term but will struggle to perform week in week out for the full season

As for eels we have depth similar to broncos but it is the unknown of a young player.  I think we would handle it as we have older more experienced fowards in junior, RCG, Alvaro and Evans all having a number of seasons under their belt.  Young players may offer more skill, strength or fitness during a game, but over a long season you need a few workhorse fowards to carry the workload and also older heads to lead the group

    • Yes big loss if true experience wise which was their criticism last year after losing Macguire now Gillet is gone they'll be in all sorts.Potentially a great pack in a couple of years they will be unstoppable.

      • Yeah, I'm not convinced. Certainly individually there is a lot of talent there, Haas, Fifita, TPJ, Carrigan, Flegler, Ofhengaue etc, but young guys need vets to give them direction and to set the tone, young players don't learn from each other. When you've just got a bunch of kids they get into bad habits that can be hard to break.

Brodie Croft will help with the general direction of the team, but I doubt he's going to make enough of a difference.

The problem is that everyone thinks they are inevitably going to make that leap at some point, but I don't think it is inevitable, far from it. They actually remind me of the bunch of young players we had in the late 90's, everyone assumed they would make the next step but they never quite did, not even Hindy really.

  •  I did that, which was fine until they all decided to model thier crocheted bikinis they had all knitted for summer, nearly choked on my pumkin scone.

        • It will be interesting, his honeymoon period up here with the media is over, and he has what can be best described as a prickly relationship with the Brisbane footy media even when things are going well.

The thing that he was never able to do last year was to establish their identity as a team, and this is where I think the Broncos front office didn't do their due diligence before signing him to such a fat deal. Yes the Bunnies were successful in his one year with them, but they were a veteran team that had won a title a few years before that had gotten stale and just needed a fresh voice after being under Madge's whip for so long. Seibold din't have to establish an identity, it was already there, it just needed to be dusted off.

At the Broncos its a very different story. He has a young team with an imbalanced roster that lacks direction, and a front office that still mistakenly sees itself as the gold standard, when it is in fact far from it. I still think they are in for a world of hurt before they reach the end of this particular tunnel.

What is also interesting to note is that the Broncos crowd average dipped below 30k for the first time since 2004.

  • Apparenty its just a partial tear, but he's still out for 3-4 months

    • Yep official statement confirming partial tear . Guess he'll be back just in time for the finals, if they can make it that far.gee they'd have been in trouble for the first few rounds if Fafita actually got punished for Bali.

  • Hope the kent does a hammy on his return.

    No really, I do.

    • I don't, I hope the donkeys keep picking the plodder.

  • good to see all the forwards getting an early run in the trial against Bunnies, although the bench must be pretty much decided it will give the young guys a chance to impress . With what I was saying just one injury or suspension and either Kafusi or Stefano gets a run, they will be keen to rip in.However I did forget one name in my original post and that is Gower, interesting to see whether his dependable seniority gets the nod before Youth? Depends on the game and situation I will guess. That's what makes the Stefano situation difficult in that Gower and depending on form but perhaps Evans could be let go if we had solid depth.with SU going  Evans becomes almost essential to resign for at least one more year until Hollis is ready unless we sign someone better .
