Mal Meninga, the most overpaid coach in League history.

I was shocked that Meninga got the Australia Coach gig for $300 k a year.He must the epitome of the right face at the right time.We all think that Hagan is the brains and sure enough,Hagan is sniffing around Mal to get the Assistant Coach job.As long as he works gratis ,I'm all for it.Mal would be slipping him half his wage already,as Mal can't coach for sh*t.My mum could coach the current Maroons squad.

Back in the 80s Mal was one of my favourite players, but his commercials  during the Super League war,"What has Rugby League ever done for me?" have just turned me off the dopey, smiling Kent for ever.

Who do you think would have provided better value for money? The Water Boy or Bennet?

  • If my memory serves me correct the NSW State of Origin coach gets paid $400K for three games so I don't think $300K for a more prestigious position is paying overs.  I my opinion the national coach should be paid double what the State of Origin coaches get, but is just my opinion.  As for Meninga getting the gig I would have thought he is probably the best non NRL coach available, and as NRL coaches are ineligible I can't think of anyone better.  Meninga will have at least two assistants who will help greatly.  I think Daley would be a good national coach but I think he should have more experience at State of Origin first.

  • Giving way too much credit to hagan.
Think Smith might be doing the whole captain /coach thing for queersland.
  • I remember - When he said "What has Rugby League ever done for me?" - What a question ? Rugby League has done everything for him.

    • I liked Ken Arthurson's response to one of the Super League players saying they were treated like dogs. Arko - Being paid good money, staying in 5 star motels, I wish someone would treat me like a dog. LOL

  • He is a John Monie of rugby league.

  • The culture he setup in the qld camp is pretty amazing. We need it for the Australian team and he will do a perfect job.
  • meninga could;t coach a choko vine up a wall

top rep teams coach themselves all they need is a game plan

and set moves which all the assistant coaches run

with the qld soo side he had for 10 years

piggy ridell would of got the same results

    • As a coach, Big Mal makes a great politician.

  • Meninga coached Canberra a few years ago and was an abject failure. He is not the coach of the Maroons, Hagan and Henry are the coaches. Meninga just gets the big money for being the face of the Maroons.

  • I think Michael Clarke said it best, "my dog Jerry could coach that team"
