I just watched Barrett's press conference and his assessment of the game was 100% spot on. Too many times last night I watched players give up on the play. Guymer showed up some of our big name forwards last night big time. This side is not committed in defence. A few instances last night that stand out was around the 20 min mark in the the first half Joe O twice gave up on the play. Whilst he was pulled off by Barrett immediately after, it was too late. I don't care how gassed you are, a committed NRL player keeps going until he collapses. Then we have the try on half time. Walker kept pushing up and got his reward, we just stood there and watched especially Cartwright. Our team is not committed to defence and a clean out is needed. I can't see any coach turning this laziness around

I completely disagree . If some smart operators come in this is an plumb job .
The team has been that badly mismanaged . There's 4 or 5 blokes who you can tap on the shoulder within the next 2 years and you have a world class outside back coming in. Couple that with one of the games better spines a smart operator can get this going quickly .
The defensive system will be blown up and rebuilt . The dogs are conceding a tonne of metres in the middle and their edges and scramble are good enough to cover for it . Part of it is attitude and players like Crichton but every guy in that system knows their role and what they have to do to execute it .
There's a reason why coaches want the job. I feel guys like Penisni will be given the chance to be coached up and guys like Russell will be seen for what they are .
SP, the myth that coaches don't want this job is simply not true. It is why we had so many interviews. A lot of coaches wanted this job, a part from Tigers a few years back where coaches knocked them back. People will say Madge knocked us back, i think we knocked him back. Now of course i do not know for sure but if he did it was 1 out of 20 or so.
We can reboot and quick, there are pieces ready to go that can be improved from a new voice.
Agree.
This was never going to be an easy transition, and the confidence levels look completely shot. Everything looks harder & worse when you just can’t get a win.
This is a 3/4 piece jigsaw puzzle imo, the rest is there.
It all starts with the defence. Rebuild this as you said, new rules, new mantras, over train this to the point where the players are calling their mrs's to slide in their sleep.
For elite defences, it becomes subconscious. We look like a team who are making their decisions on the fly because of a lack of communication, understanding with positioning, and belief in each others ability to fulfil their assignment & beat their direct opponent.
Forget attack. Its being let down by a few, which at this level, where opportunities are taken / blown by a metre, a step, or even a few inches at times, you cannot carry multiple players who simply aren't capable in try scoring positions.
Coryn may end up right, but to me this team is very capable, they need confidence & belief first & foremost, and that will come from structure & stability in the coaching ranks & defensive systems, and definitely a tweak to the roster in certain areas.
It’s pretty clear some of our players are getting very frustrated with teammates.
2025 can’t come quick enough, and the hope now is we don’t lose players in the interim who we need to keep.
Dylan Brown is a myth in my opinion
He has talent, late in the game he got going as he did against Newcastle also. But that is the issue, he comes into the game later than we need him to.
I want to see him with Hannay before i write him off completely.
Cumberland Eel, stick to Camel Racing old boy, you have no fcuking idea!
Only if you stick to your toilet cleaning job erasing all the bullshit
Dylan Brown is a younger version of Corey Norman plays a good game every 8 weeks
Our halves are the furthest thing from our problem. As a team we are scoring more than enough to win games of football. We can't bloody defend plain and simple.
I mean we do not know to be sure either way Coryn, a new coach could come in and lift them to be decent but not great and add different pieces along the way. Or could go way backwards. There are elements of this squad that are good, particularly the halves. The age of this roster is a concern, youth like Guymer showed positivity.
Defence is the main focus and should be of where Hannay goes. If Brian Smith rumour is true he will too have defence top priority, his defences as coach: 4th, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 4th, 8th, 11th, 1st. Now some tough ones in 03' and 04' but other than that Smith had great defences. Yes he is not coaching but will have insight for Hannay. If we can fix the defence you win games despite your roster, Dogs have shown that.
Not saying you are wrong Coryn, but we just do not know. Think people would have said the same in 2018. Granted, they at least had some good juniors in 2018 compared to now but the team needed a lot of work then too and we went on a good run after. We just do not know. But it is not looking good but these players are better than what they are showing. We should not get spoon based on our squad, shows there is some potential, not to win a comp but push for finals minimum.
Back 5 and defence are main focus.
