Schubert's wrong price tag drove Folau to Tahs

IF NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert had initially determined Israel Folau's value at $250,000 he almost certainly would have been posing for photos in an Eels jersey on Tuesday rather than a Waratahs one...

The 23-year-old officially confirmed a one-year deal with the Waratahs on Tuesday, believed to be worth about $350,000, but he made it clear his first preference had been to play for Parramatta and refused to rule out a return to the NRL the following season.

Folau said he would never have been in the position if Parramatta had been able to deliver on his expectations when he secured a release from the remaining two years of his contract with Greater Western Sydney on November 1.

However, the Eels had only $110,000 to spend under the salary cap and Schubert insisted that Folau be valued at $400,000 - resulting in an offer of $350,000 that was dependent on another player agreeing to a release.

Schubert's assessment was changed last Wednesday to $250,000, with Fairfax Media told it had been decided that amount was a fairer value for a player who had been in a different code for two years and whose body shape had changed during that time.

How the NSW Waratahs manage to sign, seal and deliver Israel Foalu

It emerged that the offer from the NRL and Eels was changing dramatically, and that salary cap restrictions were - from Folau's and Moses's perspective - making a return to league turn from likely to long-shot.

They had been negotiating with the NRL since September's grand final, but initial talks of $1 million a year eventually turned to a guarantee of a quarter of that amount, backed by shaky third-party deals.

The Waratahs negotiated, drew up a deal and had Folau's signature within three weeks.

  • What I want to know is why is Schubert not held accountable for placing a value on falous head in the first place? He had no right to do so, and should be stood down for his role in this fiasco. Now we have missed out on a world class player, and in 2014 you can bet your bottom dollar he will be lining up against and terrorising us. Where is the Justice?
    • Agreed but he will never be held accountable and the NRL seem to be making a big deal about what a traitor Izzy has been to hide the fact they mismanaged the whole situation.

They could have had him signed weeks ago but they fucked around and now he is gone. Can't really blame him for getting pissed off and going somewhere else.

  • It's only mismanagement if you completely discount the demands of a mercenary athlete. He broke a contract to leave AFL, and himself admits he knew any NRL club would have to do backflips to fit him in so late in the season, given the way the salary cap works. That is, he knew the rules and the terrain. So it's really a case of crying while you have your hands on the bank vault, to say he could not allow the NRL process to take its course. I still think the real contrast case here is Brett Stewart, who has patiently waited while his contract is sorted. No mercenary code jumping. If a Manly player can have such class, well gee, why is Izzy getting a free pass on what amounts to jumping at dollars? At the least, there's enough blame to go around. The NRL could have moved quicker, but Izzy could also have accepted that his late code switch meant he would have to be patient. With the Eels so public about accommodating him, he was in no different a position than Stewart, was he?
    • You're right I agree

I guess im just pissed of at the NRL and schubert felt like having a rant.

  • they also forgot to mention the little diddy about the Bulldogs paying him next year with the intention of turning out with the club in 2014..yep! that's right.

lets see Schubert pass that one, should take him all of 30 seconds..

    • So thats how they do it. Pay the players beforehand to entice them over. Is that a loophole in the cap rules?

  • I'm pissed off too, Nick! But I also wonder if others are right, who say we dodged a bullet? It has to be asked if Izzy is just maximizing per season income? He tested his market value, has made clear he could be in NRL next year, so that teams are going to make early offers and be in cap positions to pay him well for 2014. So off he goes to Yawnion, because in 2013 that is the st dollars, leaving him free to maximize again 2014 and beyond.

Overall, I think Izzy and Titans Mgmt played the Eels and NRL for fools. The real villain here is a code swapping mercenary.
  • Lets stop crying over a little spilt milk. Issie is gone.

Now what have the currant hierarchy and future Philaracy of Parramatta learnt?

1]TELL THE ARL/NRL , SCHUBERT F---ING NOTHING!!!!!!  JUST DO WHAT EVERY OTHER TEAM DOES !!! SIGN THE PLAYER FIRST AND THEN WORRY ABOUT IT AFTERWARDS.

2] ALWAYS KEEP $300000-$400000 OF SALARY CAP ON HAND FOR SUCH AN OCCASION WHEN A LATE SIGNING COMES UP.

3]PUT A CONTRACT OUT ON $K AND BELLAMY WITH THE REMAINDER OF OUR CONTRACT MONEY THIS YEAR!!!

4]PARRAMATTA TO STOP BEING THE NICE GUYS, ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

5] TRACK DOWN PAUL TAYLOR AND ALL HIS DIRECT DESCENDANTS, RIP THEIR HEARTS OUT AND TRANSPLANT THEM INTO OUR TEAM.

6] GET RID OF 3 F---ING P. GET PRICE OUT OF THE BOARD ROOM AND BACK INTO OUR JERSEY, WHERE WE REALLY NEED HIM!

7]NEVER, NEVER, NEVER TRUST A "SNAKE"!!!! UNLESS IT HAS 1 BLUE EYE AND 1 GOLD EYE.

8] YOU BETTER BE WORTH THE 4 HOUR ROUND TRIP ON SATURDAY PHILL!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND.

SIGNING OUT FOR 2012, GOOD WISHES AND MANY BEERS FOR ALL, THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON.
