Lack of support for Feleti Mateo

I was enthused to see Feleti very involved in the match early on in the game, but what is with the lack of support. If we're going to use Feleti as an attacking weapon, it needs to be based on supporting him. He's taking the ball too wide and when the outside defenders moves up to cut off the pass outside, there's no way through there, but we've got no-one inside supporting.

I would like to see him running off shorter balls with the halves looping back around for the offload. Or if he's going to play that wide then Jarryd should be hunting around in support.

Our problem is, these are our two main weapons so today they played almost exclusively either side of the ruck. And so Feleti was playing the extra man in the line, which just meant no support runners all night.

I still remain of the opinion that Mateo needs to be six.

If he isn't six, the bullet needs to be bitten and Hayne needs to be six and Luke Burt or Tom Humble moved to fullback because we're a team that offloads without anyone playing in support.

(BTW, we have one of the best supporting halves in the game, but he's not playing in the halves).

  • i agree hayne no 6 burt fullback humble to the wing
  • I cried tears of blood to see Feleti struggling in a tackle with his arm out ready to unload and NO ONE WAS THERE.
He was desperate for a runner and the only jersey in sight was Ben Smith who had a roosters player between him and Feleti.
Interesting tonight when our forwards could not get a great deal of go forward because of the roosters hard defense that our halves were found wanting again and the work was left up to Hayne and Mateo.
  • Mateo is playing down the wrong channel and has the wrong number on his back. If DA doesn't want him at 6, at least change things around a little. Get him in the middle of the park occasionally.
    • Your assessment of Burt is biased and unsubstantiated. It's an opinion, you're entitled to it, but keep it to yourself because I've not seen anyone else agree with you about Burt. He's a team player. He chases every ball, he's quick and he's all class. You are wrong. End of story.
  • I totally agree with the suggested moves. Shame the Coach wouldn't...
  • I agree 1Eyed. Move Hayne or Mateo to 6. If Hayne to 6, then Burt to fullback.
  • I like Daniel Anderson, but his game plans leave a bit to be desired, he butchered a great Warriors team, he let the best ball playing forward at that time go in Ali Lauititi, and now he has let Matao go.... If ando had said Mateo is part of his plans for the future, Eels would have retained him, no question...

I think Mateo will come back to haunt us,,, he will fire nicely at Warriors.
  • I also dont agree that Hayne should be five-eight, Hayne needs space to create the things he does, he can only do that at full-back... Kinda like Slater, needs space to create.
  • didnt hagan play mateo at 6 ? , what happen to the support play missing all year. thats why we went so well last year, we will be lucky to make 8,
  • My key changes.

If it were up to me Mateo will be playing 5/8th with Robson at halfback. Mortz will be on the bench interchanging with Robson or MK depending how the game flows. This way Mortz will continue learning his halfback role as well as the hooker role which might be suited for him at this stage.

As for Inu I will keep him on. He electryfies in the big games. His last 3 games have been his best all year and he is getting better. I will have Humble replace Reddy in the centres and have Grothe (uninjured) come in for Burt.

Moi Moi on the bench. Starting him off is a huge waste. His an impact player. He plays his best footy there.

My team would look like this....

    1. The Chosen One
    2. Joel Reddy - Replaced by "Grothe" as soon as his injury free.
    3. Tom Humble - Luke burt has been playing poorly.
    4. Timana Tahu
    5. Krisnan Inu - Building up momentum.
    6. Feleti "The GreatOne" Mateo - The missing link to our Halves problem.
    7. Jeff Robson
    8. Nathan Cayless (c)
    9. Matt Keating
    10. Justin Poore
    11. Nathan Hindmarsh (c)
    12. Ben Smith
    13. Justin Horo

    14. Daniel Mortimer
    15. Fuifui Moimoi - Plays his best off the bench. Impact player.
    16. Tim Mannah
    17. Brendan Oake

Do this and you have your playoffs as well as your Premiereship.
