Knights Put Eels to the Sword in Toyota Cup

Official Eels Report The Pirtek Parramatta Eels were swamped by the Newcastle Knights in the Toyota Cup, conceding 10 tries on their way to a 50-22 loss at Parramatta Stadium. The Eels led 10-nil early and 16-10 at half time before being overwhelmed during a second half in which the Knights ran in eight tries to one. The Eels converted a weight of early possession into points after 13 minutes, when Ryan Morgan went over in the corner for a 4-nil lead. They scored on a near identical play just three minutes later, Daniel Cross scoring for TK Amosa to convert and stretch the lead out to 10. The Knights hit back on their first trip inside the Eels 20 metre zone, interchange prop Josh Ailaomai crashing over on the left edge, with Peter Mata’utia converting for a 10-6 score line. The visitors levelled it up shortly before the break, Byron Fruean crossing in the 36th minute, however the Eels stretched their lead once more in the shadow of half time when Peni Terepo scored a converted try to make it 16-10. Tries to Kevin Naiqama and Ailaomai saw the Knights open up a 20-16 lead early in the second half, before Jason Baitieri scored a high flying – and ultimately converted – four pointer to put his side back into the lead at 22-20. Ryan Stig dummied his way brilliantly through the Eels defence to provide the spark for Ailomai’s third try, cover defence no match for the big Kiwi who planted the ball in the corner. Ben Wyborn then crossed for the Knights, with Mata’utia converting for a 30-22 lead. Mata’utia then finished off a Knights break to score one of his own, while Naiqama then bagged a double to put the visitors out to an 18 point lead at 40-22. Further tries to Jake Finn and Ryan Lamb heaped misery on the Eels heading into full time, Chris Marlborough converting the Lamb try for a final score of 50-22. TOYOTA CUP Newcastle Knights 50 (Josh Ailomai 3, Kevin Naiqama 2, Byron Fruean, Ben Wyborn, Peter Mata'utia, Jake Finn, Ryan Lamb tries; Peter Mata’utia 4 goals from 8 attempts; Chris Marlborough 1 goal from 2 attempts) defeated the Pirtek Parramatta Eels 22 (Ryan Morgan, Daniel Cross, Peni Terepo, Jason Baitieri tries; TK Amosa 3 goals from 3 attempts; Albert Kelly 0 goals from 1 attempt) At Parramatta Stadium.

"Manly are very beatable. Their defence out wide is highly suspect. However, the eels look very tired, and I can't see them taking advantage. "
