It's all but officially confirmed that he's off to the Cowboys for next year. He will still train and if available will be a starting prop for our NYC team.
Attitude?
Salary cap?
All of the above?..
I still think it's a real shame and a waste. We brought him up through the ranks. Put all the effort into his development. Yes he's had some injuries. But if he goes to another club and starts killing it I'm going to be pissed.
Also, is Loko playing for the dogs reserve grade yet? Or is he still in rehab?
I'm guessing it has to do with salary cap and the fact that we've got fit players younger than him that haven't been as injured he is. Josh Aloiai whilst not being as good Kelepi in attack imo is a much better all-round player, in 2012 Kelepi was dropped for non-tackling and then when he came back he spent a few weeks in the centres, I know tackling can be taught but when you have a player as good as Josh coming through your ranks I think we can spend money better elsewhere. Not only Josh in the NYC we have a very young forward pack with Moeroa, Jnr Paulo, Terepo, Pauli, Ma'u, and Edwards in our side. Next year we only have 1 contracted forward who has over 100 NRL games experience and that's Tim Mannah with 140. I think releasing Kelepi may be due to us signing a forward with more experience, there has been talk of Watmough coming over and if he were to come over he would bring with him not just 270 NRL games worth of experience but also a couple of Grand Finals experience, a S.O.O experience, and also an Australian experience. With our young pack that sort of understanding in the game would be a massive positive for our team. It just so happened that at the time Kelepi was injured and it would have been a lot easier to justify offloading an injured player than say a Pauli Pauli or Tepai Moeroa.
For him killing it in the future, that's the risk you play in recruitment and retention, it's a very fine line to walk and sometimes you can screw it up massively like the Dogs did when they kept Brent Sherwin and let go of Jonathan Thurston and like we did with Paul Gallen. The line gets a little wider the more good juniors you have coming through.
Loko's still in rehab although the Doggies do have a bye in the NSW cup this week.
I dont care.
Those runts can pay to train rehab etc.
I havr faith the both will return one day....to give us the benefit without cost.
Sooner rather thsn later.
Well said spot on
Hi Ham, really well explained. Makes a lot of sense.
Well summed up Ham and spot with your comments, I know there are a few people within the club disappointed that BA decided to let Kelepi move on. But that is the nature of evolution at the EELS and I have faith in what BA is building at the Mighty EELS.
I know it's going to be a bit of a touchy topic but imo BA hasn't really built this team. He's definitely brought in a few fringe players and has made them into first grade players but for the most part these players were either in our system or were brought over by other coaches. What BA is and what we needed was a first grade coach. He has a good footy mind, and he's done very well so far this year. We'll see his recruitment and retention brain to work when we have a fair bit of money to use for the cap with some strong juniors coming through and some potential halves on the market. Hopefully his job is made easier with DA in the position he is and hopefully we can soon get another person looking after the junior system.
Probably is Parra have been on the wrong end of that fine line for the last 10 years. Something needs to be done.
