Junior Rep Trials - A Quick Observation

On Saturday December 12, trials for the Under 14s Development Squad, Harold Matthews Squad and SG Ball Squad were held at the Old Saleyards Ground. I caught the Matts trials against Wests and South West Academy. I watched about 1/2 of the first Ball trial.A couple of young blokes that I believe are worth keeping an eye on includeJP Nhora - Matts fullbackMark Tepu- Smith - Matts propWilliam Kei - Matts centreTui Afualo - Ball half/ five eighthEthan Parry - Ball centreThere were a couple of certainties for selection who were rested, and blokes like Forty and Ham have seen far more of these young blokes than me, but I would be surprised if these blokes listed above didn't feature. There were quite a few people in attendance, which meant having to park some distance away. It also resulted in my car being struck by a mystery "driver" who decided it was best not to leave their details. A nice surprise on my return.I'm sure that others in attendance (and there were a few other miscreants in my company) will be able to add some names or details to this blog.

  • Miscreants - it aptly describes a couple of these rogues! Tepai Tepu Smith was playing NYC this year. Not sure of his status for 2016.
  • I think he went to rugby
  • Went to game stayed for all.the games watch the 15 trials there some boys in that team look like first graders . They were very tall and i thought should be in the matts team.
  • The U15s is very strong, they went through last years U14s knockout undefeated and beat everyone reasonably well, including Penrith by 3 tries to nil

There are 3 boys that made the Matts playing up a year from the 15s, depending on a few last minute selections they will either make the team or the Academy side.

The Matts were very strong in defnc, held the Magpies for 3 sets from 10 meters. The Ball looks OK, they played without their halves Seve and Turnbull and still went well.
  • A follow up, last years U14 Division 1 was very strong, in the Immortals Challnge they invite 2 teams from each district into a weekend tournament finishing wth the best 2 teams playing the Final on a Sunday night. The Final was between Rouse Hill and Wentworthville, they beat the Brothers, St Mary's , Eaglevale etc and a combined Illawarra team etc to get there.

Other districts are circling, don't trust Bozo and others who are talking abut opportunities to represent in their teams even at this age
    • There were quite a few people in attendance at Saleyards and I suspected that there may have been some interested spectators outside of club staff, family, friends and tragics. Turnbull was one of the certainties for selection that didn't play.
