Johnny Howard to run NRL!?

An independent commission to govern the entire ARL/NRL is looong overdue, I'm sure you'll agree. From what I've heard and read, the running of the game is a dead-set joke. Gus nearly has a fit every time he talks about it.Recently there has been a genuine effort to start this independent governing body, which is the best news in regards to the state of the game for a long time. And none other than ol' Johnny Howard has been approached for the top job. I reckon he would be an excellent choice... he is a massive fan of the NRL (Dragqueens in particular, poor bastard) and would have some friends in very high places."Mr Howard's possible appointment has also been backed by the chief executive of NRL grand finalists Parramatta.Eels boss Paul Osborne, himself a former politician, says Mr Howard would be an ideal leader to chart a new course for rugby league."The most pleasing thing for me, whether it's John or somebody else, is that there's now a genuine push for an independent commission," Osborne said."We'll support it as a club wholeheartedly and we hope it happens sooner rather than later."http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/10/07/2706698.htm?site=sport&section=all

  • Yeh can't come quick enough. It's a massive conflict of interest for the game to be tied to a single media organisation.

Can't say I'm a fan of little Johnny and I always favour seasoned business executives to come into these types of positions. I could see him in a chairman-like role but I think the priority for the NRL needs to be making as much money as it possibly can to ensure the future success of the game.
  • I hate Howard. How about Hawke lol. But he's too old now. I'm a massive young fan of Hawke and the ALP! Hopefully one day I'm going to end up as a CEO of my own company that's going to be massive or a politician and be able to control the NRL in some way. Then it shall be a new dynasty for the Eels!
  • Yeah, I wasn't a fan of Howard when he was Prime Minister... but his leadership and organising skills would come in handy for this kind of job, not to mention his big contacts.

The fact is that the organisation of rugby league in Australia is a circus. There is absolutely no need for 5 or 6 different bodies like the NRL, ARL, NSWRL, CRL, QRL and the rest of them. Unity is the key.
    • Chairman of the board I could live with
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOWARD COULDNT RUN THE COUNTRY, HE STUFFED UP EVERY WORKING MAN AND WOMAN IN AUSTRALIA , HE SET HIMSELF UP IN WEALTH AND MEDICAL FOR LIFE BEFORE RETIRING .

HE SENT AUSTRALIA INTO WAR , AUSTRALIA VOTED HIM OUT AND IN A BIG WAY - NOOOOOOO PLEASE I CANT STAND THAT GUY.

LET HIM WALK TO THE RETIREMENT HOME , HE CAN WATCH LEAGUE THERE
  • There might be a spot somewhere for Costello too, seeing as he's retiring from parliament.
    • Haha... bring back Keating... he didn't take shit from no-one...
  • I would hate to see this little grub running this working mans game. He's not a person of the people and is a rah rah as well.He knows nothing about the game and would be giving out jobs to all his Liberal cronies. We do need a person not affiliated with any clubs but someone who has a real passion for the game and would put the people us the fans ahead of there own personal interests. This bloke is george bush's best mate. The thought of him having anything to do with our game makes me sick.NO FUCKING WAY!!!
