Joey's Comments re Reed Mahoney

How's this bozo's form?

Currently on the Eels payroll and spouting out about how the new Queensland franchise should be chasing Reed Mahoney!!!

Totally unprofessional and a clear conflict of interests.

  • Just paper talk majority of them will stay might lose one or two but can’t keep them all.

  • We pay him to help our players, we don't pay him to curb his opinion when doing his day job. He was asked who he'd chase if he was recruitin for the Dolphins and he suggested Reed. That's a pretty good acknowledgement of Reed's talent and ability if he's saying a new franchise could build a squad around him.

    • I had a feeling someone would say that.

There is a difference here - and it would depend on how Johns' is being engaged by the club. If he is providing his services as a contractor, then by all means, offer your opinion when performing a different role, but, if he is an employee - and I suggest he would have to be lest his engagement be considered 'sham' by the Fair Work Ombudsman, he has a common law duty to his employer not to act against its best interests.

Clearly, this 'opinion', whilst complimentary of Reed, is not in the current best interests of the club.

The only loophole to this would be if his contract of employment (again, assuming he is an employee, not a contractor) explicitly permits him to make comments in the media that run counter to the club's interests.

Either way, I can't imagine BA would be doing cartwheels over this - and it is unprofessional.

      • He accepted the role with the club on the condition that he wouldn't be expected to curb his opinion on our players.

        • If that is the case, then he is in the clear.

That would be the 'loophole' I refer to. Do you know this for a fact Brett or are you speculating?

          • He was quoted as such, BA confirmed it.

          • No, that's a fact. I asked a couple of sources at the club about Johns at the start of the season and they said he's a contracted consultant.

            • It makes total sense. Johns would completely compromise all of his other media roles (which would earn the vast, vast, vast majority of his pay) if he was hindered as to his opinion.

The contracted help he's giving the players is, in essence, a side-gig because he clearly loves the game.

Johns makes his living by giving his opinion. Plus it was hardly a revelation - Mahoney is a Gold Coast native, is off contract at the right time and was on the cusp of Qld origin. They'd have to be stupid not to consider him. It's not like he was flying under the radar...

              • I do appreciate the fact that Reed would be looked at closely by the new franchise, irrespective of whether Joey said anything or not.

It's the principle that irks me.

"Warriors — highest completions, lowest error count in the comp.
Us — Polar opposite, overall. 4th worst for completions. 4th worst for errors and ball handling. It's cost us in the grind, and a few wins.

Losing Metcalf/ Barnett seems to have hit. They were also a better team with Walker even if Erin Clark has…"
