Jason Demetriou

Since we’re throwing around coaching alternatives I’ll throw in the best assistant coach in the competition and one who should already be coaching an NRL club in his own right. The blokes I know who’ve played under Demetriou rate him highly and his coaching credentials speak for themselves.Came back from playing in England after a year captain coaching in the lower divisions where he got the Northern Pride head coaching gig for two years subsequently winning the minor premiership on both occasions winning the competition the second season as well as the inaugural state championship on grand final day.Became an assistant at the Cowboys in 2015 the year they win the Competition before joining his childhood team the Dragons. As assistant at the Dragons he was also the Cutters coach where there forward pack destroyed all comers where Demetriou was named Coach of the yearPlayers pushed for him to take over the Dragons from McGregor but he subsequently was poached by Bennet and still assistant at the Broncos.A lot of you aren’t keen on a rookie coach but it’s certainly the perfect way to incorporate a director of football without blow back from an established clip board holder. He’s very highly regarded and won’t be long till he’s snapped up somewhere.

  • Can coach attack very well too.
  • Jason is a great coach but will probably take over the Broncos after Wayne. Holbrook is the one we need.

    • Holbrook or Demitrou would be good gets, I can see Bernie or Max chasing langmack because he would come cheap.

    • Both will do
  • I don't have problem with a rookie coach as look what siebold has achieved. It all depends if they are happy to let others have input and willing to learn themselves. A lot of league coaches use the my way or highway attitude and unwilling to delegate or let others help not trusting their extended staff. I would prefer the club develop or have coach in lower grades or assistant role first before promoting them so club can really gauge their skill set as souths did with siebold.
They didn't hesitate to replace maquire a premiership winning coach as they saw the skill set siebold had. Similar with Trent Robinson at roosters who stepped up replacing a failing coach. Anthony Griffin is another developed by a club coaching juniors who went on to have success before bringing Bennett back. The broncos despite having money to spend were happy with him despite others clubs and fans not seeing the appeal.
BA and Kearney as well as others have succeeded as assistant coaches yet haven't converted that to sustained success as head coach, so we need identify what makes a good assistant coach or lower grade coach and not fall into trap that they will succeed if step up. We bought assistant coaches from elsewhere before and failed so I don't want club repeat past mistakes.
Siebold and Bellamy are big on personal development and although a lot of coaches travel to other sporting organisations these 2 have sought out more and different methods of teaching and development outside the sporting world then others which sets them apart.
I am not sure which coaches to chase but if bringing younger or assistant coach would like see parra set up with head of footy, better assistants and coaching framework for a year before they take over.
    • Thats the problem we have now, BA is a my way or highway coach. Most good assistant coaches would find it hard and frustrating to work under him. And Brad has made it clear he will be there for 2019.

So first up we need a Football manager, one who can overide BA when nneeded especially  recruitment, and can also chase 2 good assistants with the knowledge  1 will be head coach in 2020.Hopefull Kev Walters and Luke Burt, also Toovey as a defensive  coach.

      • Every coach is a my way or the highway coach.

      • Exactly.

      • Great comments Coryn.  I read an article with comments from rick  Charlesworth stating exactly the same thing as you do here. That is ...basically all clubs and sports have specialised coaches and assistants in every area and that head coach in sports these days are essentially just man Managers/physiologists that  set an example...all things being equal in level of first class assistants etc its the main point of difference that one club can get the edge on...

Right from the get go ‘18 the onfield  synergy for us wasn’t there and if the  “keep turning up for each other” thing wasn’t working as in the past., was it the roster dynamics crucial positions not melding , our coach not afforded the same as competitors, class of assistants or purely just the coach and his man management skills letting him down?

Personally think it’s a combo of the whole Lot... left to spiral downwards for about two months longer than it should’ve...although BA did try to seek help from swans coach.

anyway all too late for the investigation and BA which really ought to have taken place about two months ago...

  • Rate him very highly, I honestly thought the Titans would grab him to replace Neil Henry. Given that Bellamy looks like he’s staying in Melbourne, I’m guessing he’ll succeed Bennett at the Broncos in 2020.
