JARRYD HAYNE — San Francisco 49ers Latest Opinion

JARRYD HAYNE — San Francisco 49ers, punt/kick returner

At least one 49ers beat writer has seen enough during the team’s OTAs to suggest Hayne will not make it as a running back in the NFL this season.

Hayne was always facing a stiff challenge against the likes of Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush, Kendall Hunter and Mike Davis and may have to prove himself an irresistible special teams option to nail a place on San Francisco’s roster. This is a difficult ask, with specialist punt and kick returners needing to rate as a back-up option in another position.

“Jarryd Hayne must earn his spot with the 49ers on special teams,” wrote Matt Maiocco for Comcast Bay Area. “He looks comfortable fielding punts, but he is going to have to distinguish himself running down the field on punts and kickoffs to have any chance of earning a spot on the 53-man roster.

“At this point, it’s unreasonable to think he can make the team solely as a running back. While playing rugby league in Australia, he probably never heard anyone talk about his pad level ... because he never wore pads in his former career. The pads do not go on until training camp, and he will have to make a quick adjustment.

“Hayne runs too upright to succeed as an NFL running back. Maybe he’s just unsure of himself, too, but he does not exhibit the kind of explosion and short-area quickness that’s a necessity at his position.”

Matt Barrows, writing for the Sacramento Bee, noted “Hayne continues to look very natural at the position” fielding punts from rookie Bradley Pinion.

  • If Hayne does not make the cut, are the Eels looking at him for 2016?

    • Oh Jeethus Chrythst.

      Let it go...

    • foren took haynes money and izzy falou may need the left over from sandow  and pauli pauli, kelly, morgan, joe paulo ect . so its near certain  hayne if cut will be a bulldog or as reported rooster, that why the rooster ley there fullback go now, haynes there man.

but the rooster may have to give hayne a life contract higher then dce..

    • Robert, izzy is staying at rugby
  • Losing Sandow and Lussick would almost pay for him.

  • Of course he was never going to make the cut as one of the main rb's for the team but players like bush and hunter are injury prone so hayne could get a shot as a back up and he will probably be the teams kickoff returner.
  • Home you come jarryd
    • When he does come home , eventually, will b very interesting to see whether his ' word' is just that lol. Maybe his faith will pay off for us and he keeps his ' lifetime deal' with parra :-)
  • hayne to the roosters , maybe thats why he back in sydney missing hes family and hillsong church.

maybe the roosters ceo in talks , if dce worth hes current manly contract, haynes a better rugby league player then dce no doubt.

  • He always said he would come back to the Eels, I would like to think that's what he would do. But you look at the players that have left & come back. Who has retuned to there former glory? Rogers maybe? Wendell in to Toquiri just, Tahu no, Marshall wasn't gone long enough. Hunt Ruin, SBW yes. 3 years a long time.
