‘It cost us the game’: Eels furious over missed call in match-winning try

The Eels were furious on Friday night and accused officials of allowing a blatant obstruction in the Panthers’ match-winning try. Parramatta were left furious following a brutal loss on Friday night and accused officials of allowing a blatant obstruction in the lead up to Penrith’s match-winning try.

Eels skipper Clint Gutherson called the Bunker “a lottery” while interim coach Trent Barrett was just as scathing of the missed call in the 78th minute The Panthers needed one more try to pull off an epic comeback and Izack Tago scored it at the death, but replays showed lead runner Liam Martin taking out Eels defender Daejarn Asi.

Despite a lengthy review, the try stood and Nathan Cleary knocked over the conversion to hand the premiers an incredible 36-34 victory.

“The last try I thought there was an obstruction in there and a pretty bad one too,” Barrett said.

  • The song remains the same though. Annesely will either completely overlook it or will spend twenty minutes defending the decision. Even if he admits it was the wrong call what's it going to do? "OK cool thanks" Penrith continue to get all the calls and the rest get screwed over.

    • Agree unfortunately. Yet I think in these situations where the better team gets robbed of the game and 2 competition points then the NRL should be given the opportunity to overturn these results if the evidence is absolutely clear and undeniable. Imagine this situation during the Finals which from memory has actually happened numerous times

      • I agree with you. But the best I think will happen is the bookies will refund those effected by the result.

Remember Tigers vs Cowboys a few years back? Tigers had the game won and the bunker made the wrong call which cost them the game. The NRL even admitted it was wrong. If they didn't change the result after that game they never will.

    • The only thing that may happen if by some small chance they admit an error is Parra will get the 50/50 calls go their way for a few weeks.

      Canberra/Ricky are great at that

  • End of the day you cannot cruise through rugby league and let the red decide a game. You need to bury teams and run away with wins. Once you get the lead you can't let the opposition constantly back into the game. We blew it, had a great lead and let them run in numerous tries. That's the attitude that must change

    • Agree 💯 yet the lead was run down by Eels slackening off in combination with blatant wrong refereeing decisions. Subtract the wrong decisions and the would have won in my opinion

    • Yes you are right but it doesn't mean the 2 issues aren't independent of each other. BA never complained about decisions and it didn't help. Last night the bunker made 2 blatantly wrong calls and they rightfully should be put under the spotlight

      • Cumberland and angry it's part of the game refs making the wrong calls, always has and will be. Bellamy no matter what never gets into games they lose by wrong calls, because he teaches them to put games to bed and take the refs out of it. Panthers are normally good at it as well. BA and gutho used to blame a lot of loses on refs.

        • Bellamy, Cleary, Robinson and WB have all had plenty of cracks at the referees. I agree as a coach you can't get too caught up blaming them but you can't bend over for them either. The referees in the middle have every right to make mistakes on the run, but there is no excuse for the bunker to continually fuck up.

    • Spot on
