Is this a result of the Melbourne fiasco?

Up until this week Parra were sounding confident, in the media at least, of being able to hang on the both Mateo and Inu.Now we are releasing both. This means one of two things in my opinion;1. Either we are planning at least minor recruitment next season or2. The salary cap scandal has emphasised the need to keep a 'clean house'. Signing Mateo and Inu following the upgrading of Mortimer, Hayne and Moi Moi as well as the signing of Tahu, Poore and Shackleton would have at least seemed a little dodgy. So which is it in your opinions?

  • But it does look a little suspect with Cayless retiring - he was on about $350,000 wasn't he?

So with Mateo and Inu going we will be at least $500,000 better off after you take into account the backended deals that Tahu and I think Hindmarsh are on.

So unless we sign a couple of players it looks suspect to me.
  • All along, Osbourne has said he wanted to keep them both. I don't ever recall him saying he was confident of doing so however. As soon as it was mooted that the Warriors were going to offer that sort of money, especially for Mateo, you always know we were pushing shit uphill.
  • fair enough.

BTW in no way am I saying that Parra are currently cheating the cap, I am just talking about 'appearances' because along with actually keeping clean books I am sure all clubs want to avoid appearing to 'do a Melbourne' following that scandal.
  • I don't think so but I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure the figure of 230k was touted in the papers as all we could afford well before the storm caper, and that Mateo would have to take less to stay. Maybe Iny u was never in the plans.

Really really dissapointed for these guys. They wanted to stay, and now have to pick up and move.

Maybe this is also part of the reason why Hayne shot off at the mouth last week. I'd say with Inu and him being mates would have talked about what's now been anounced.
  • agree 110% TB, i like ur insight on this
  • lets hope it will spurt some recruitment!!!!!
  • i think you will find the eels are going for a big signing ------ TBA later just my guess
  • take cayless into account ,inu and mateo , add grothe to the list , then add the extra dollars we get from storm , hmmmmmmmm = big signing ?
  • I actually think going to the Warriors could be a bad move for these guys to be honest. The last thing the kiwi's need is two flamboyant, flashy players that are prone to ill disipline and handling errors, their team is full of them already. The Warriors need some hardworking tradesman like players to do the tough stuff and play percentage footy to compliment their current adlib roster.
Even if the Eels were only offering these two 220k a year that means we should have close to $450,000 to spend and in my opinion they should go all out for Cronk. He would provide the playmaking, organising influence that we need but also has a great kicking game aswell.Fingers crossed.
    • What would be the point of that when we have just signed Mortimer?
