IS ANYTHING TRULY OBJECTIVE?

This is the last one in the series as tomorrow we start the lead in the the bulldogs game.I have chosen these as a way the think about how we interact as Eels supporters and 1EE members. So, can we be truly objective here? We all call it as we see it and believe what we say, but how do we know that what we say it true, or objective?Colour depends on how our eyes and brains work as true colour is not as straight forward as we think. If you put an eels jersey in a blackened room, how do you know it blue and gold? If you shine a different type of light on it, it will also appear a different colour and to those who are colour blind, colours are different and can cause confusion.Recently there was internet debate over a dress colour and people argued over what they saw and how people could see anything different. Was it black and white, gold and blue or black and gold? So, reading and writing comments on here needs to be considered carefully, most aren't trying to be difficult they are merely giving what they believe is their objective opinion, even though some may see it differently.Sandow has had 4 yrs and is now leaving, this is a good thing. Based on my view of the parramatta landscape.I hope you enjoy the read and please give me your objective opinion.

  • I will attempt to answer your heading as succinctly as possible.

Your question is an excellent one as many people think what they are saying is totally correct when its just their point of view and another person will have a different point of view. People that understand this are thinking beyond their own biases and understand that nothing is as black and white at it appears.

In my profession being totally objective is impossible, however it is a goal when posing your view.

So it is imperative to understand your biases and be cognisant of your biases and subjectivity when writing a piece of work so you remove your biases and subjectivity as much as possible.

Having said that it is a goal of being objective, however it is impossible to remove all your biases as they are your experiences you cannot totally obliterate from your conscious and subconscious mind.

What could also happen when filtering your material regarding a subject you might discard material that doesn't fit the view you might want to bring to the debate,.

I can go on but I will not as it just expands on the main points I have made.

  • Tbur, I'm not sure if you're being serious or taking the p##s as you're swimming into waters of deeper thought. I'll assume the best intentions & bite.

I'd argue 'objectivity' is 'subjective'. Old saying, 'perception is reality'..

Scientists are meant to be objective folks.

10-15 or so years ago they discovered that 99.99% of the universe is space & discovered that space is DARK ENERGY. They also know they don't know what dark energy is. Haha..

Objectively speaking, everything we see, feel, touch, and experience subjectively feels 'real' & appears to be solid - but in truth is not. It's the opposite & mysterious & can't be defined objectively. Not really.

All we have to guide us is our moral compass & our subjective experiences. We feel as we feel, think as we think .

P.S. All that aside I'll always love us Eels.
    • And time moves at different rates for different people so like time, objectivity is relative.

    • Hi FME, I agree. Ultimately, time is illusory, but what a ride, yehaaa..

Hi Kurupt, lol.. haha. Remember Patch ?
    • I disagree that objectivity is really subjectivity. If it were, why bother with two different words. Moreover, the example from science collapses objectivity into truth, an argument again undone by the two words thing. Objective implies an external referent, subjective an internal referent, and truth a transcendental referent. Suitably separated, the example from science only dispels the notion of objective as transcendent. Which is correct.
    • Oh Kurupt,
Those were the days buddy. Bowe, Hope, Patch & Victor, Maylene lol.

      Hi Professor Daz,
I like what you're saying because it's sounds intelligent & well thought out, but I don't really understand 100% what you're saying..

Re truth, I gravitate towards the Buddhist Two Truths, that walk hand in hand.

The 'Relative' truth (our human relative /sensory/perceptory experience) & 'Absolute' Truth (the true nature of things beyond the relative but not really separate from it & the basis of our relative experience).

E.g. a table looks solid (relative) but is really space (absolute).
    • Hi Prof Daz,

The head and tail sides of a coin maybe opposites but they still exist on the same coin.

I'll just accept you're right from a certain philosophical angle that you hold and espouse & leave it there.

We're different. I don't much believe in a linear either/or 'black/white' view of the world, which would be incorrect from your angle & argument.

      Thanks for the reply.
  • Goal kicking can be looked at objectively, but other than that it's difficult as everyone has their own style they believe is the most effective
  • Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.
    • That's deep man.
