  • The writer of this article has missed the point. It's not that smaller is better, its that fans want more than just a seat & a half hour wait for a warm beer & cold pie.

To use Yankee Stadium as an example, the seats in the new stadium on wider and longer with more leg room, every seat in the stadium has a cup holder, there is 4 times as many corporate boxes and there is nearly 3,400 club seats whereas in the old stadium there were none.

Which leads to the key point, corporate hospitality. It's in corporate hospitality that stadium owners make their money. Modern stadium economics demand that facilities are now a 24/7 business proposition, not just a Sunday afternoon home ground, especially given the level of taxpayer funding expected to be ploughed into stadiums these days. Which is why the entire Eastern Stand @ BankWest is corporate boxes & suites, because that's where the money is.

    • Brett that is a fair point but I believe ticket prices are the main consideration for the majority. If prices are reasonable and affordable in line with budget then most fans want to attend live games even if long ques for moderate ( and overpriced) pies and beer. I agree the atmosphere can often seem better with larger crowds as the author stated however for me I enjoy it more when I can stretch my legs and put my things on the seat next to me .

    • Brett the corporates and Club seats are in the Western stand however your point is well made.

Despite my initial disappointment at being moved to the Eastern stand I love going to Bankwest. Great atmosphere and brilliant viewing from my seat.

This is a result of a stadium built to the correct size and fit for purpose.

The only complaint I have is the sun during afternoon games. It is a real pain.

The food is well priced and both food and alcohol are accessible.

      • My apologies, I confused myself. I know they are in the western stand, but I was thinking “facing east away from the sun” as I was typing, lol

Id like to think they could come up with a reasonably inexpensive work around to that afternoon sun.

  • Anybody hear about the bankwest roofs leaking during the soccer the other night lol, and on top of that apparently the roof didnt keep anybody dry in the etire bottom section of the stadium, everybody down the front had to move to the back.

People wernt happy on social media.

    • Most open stadium roofs won't completely cover for every weather condition, that's a given, especially when the rain is coming in sideways. However on 95% of rain occasions, Bank west would cover 100% of patrons.

The only alternative is fully enclosed stadiums which are uneconomical.  The leaks need to be ironed out.

      • We are in row 2 on the eastern side and twice it rained and we got wet .but we didn't care  just have to put up with it as it doesn't rain all the time

It's very ripe for corruption that's for sure.
How to you fix it ? You can't, without slowing the game down so much that it becomes NFL.…"
