In Support of Mortimer

Many people have been quick to blame Morts for last year. In many areas he did not meet our expectations and probably his own. But let's look at some facts before we hang him out to dry.

1. Morts had a great 2009 behind a pack of forwards that rolled over teams and tired them out with their offloads.

2. He was playing 5/8 in 2009.

3. The forwards did not do their job in 2010.

4. The dummy half service and variety was below par in 2010. Far too many passes that did not take the attack forward.

5. He was asked to take kicks in general play in 2010 - and this is not one of his talents.

6. He stood out as a support player in 2009 - there were not the breaks to support in 2010.

7. Most of the team did not play well and the confidence of those players in crucial positions took a battering.

8. A year of tough learning won't hurt him.

I do not expect Kearney to play Morts as a half and nor should he. The signing of an experienced half to play alongside Morts will be the making of him.

  • Michael, thanks for your reply. We won the games when our forwards did their job. Look at our win /loss ratio and this is reflective of our forwards. Halves look better when the forwards do their job. Look at the difference between Thurston's dominance at State of Origin and what happened for him at the cowboys this year. Solid is not enough to win games in the NRL. Dominance is needed. When forwards bend the defence line the backs can do their thing.
  • Thanks for your support.
I believe that Morts will be better for having to go through last year's horrors.
  • i 100 % agree that morts should not play hafback in the 2011 season in 2010 i think that morts was crushed by the expextation by all of us the pressure on the young players of todays game to perform is massive. In 2010 i have no doubt that morts tried everthing he could to give parra the best shot at making the top 8 but thing is that the excution was no there everything our boys tried turned into nothing. thats why parra need an expierenced halfback/five eighth for 2011 whether its Matt orford or Johnathan thurston it doenst matter what matters is that we need a halfback/fiveigth who can run the team. I have no doubt with time morts will turn into a great player but i am nto 100 % sure if that time is now and for now he needs a expirenced half to mentor him.
  • yer sorry i will have to agree with michael on this one, our forwards were deff not our problem they never have been, our attack on the other hand was were we lacked an even though i love morts an was over the moon when he resigned with parra an not the dogs, but we do need a half bk in 2011
  • i agree 100% we deff need a half bk in 2011 or we r just ganna have another 2010 result
  • thats what im saying its good to know that people on this site can see that we need a half
  • hope morts can put on an extra 10-15 kg
  • I support morts 50%...and the other 50% goes to his looks! hes so cute
  • i dont see morts being a halback until he has matured as a playmaker
  • 100% that Morts skill set is based on being a support player not a playmaker. And teams need support players who can support half breaks and turn them into full breaks or tries. That is the role he can play evry effectively.
