IM STILL RIDING FOR THIS TEAM

As one of the few Unicorn Riders left on the site and given what is likely to happen in the next few days. I wanted to remind people of what we can take away from this season.

We know that the NRL will be handing down their punishment to Parramatta and in all likelihood it will be a 12 point deduction and a fine. Possibly more points, we’re really not sure.

Our track record as fans is to go off over things like this, but the time this process has taken has given us an opportunity to digest everything and work through the emotions.

What Id like to dwell on is our Team. Over the past years we as supporters have held firm and wished our team would show the same fight and determination. The team has been the weak point and we have made our feeling known.

Now its out turn to be strong and fully back our team, a team who has had to endure Board issues, being called cheats, losing teammates to meet Cap constraints, other teammates as mid year transfers for various reasons, teammates who have got caught up with the wrong people, their new Captain being injured for the majority of the season and going through psychological issues and now the knowledge that one of their stars was looking to desert them because he wanted more money.

And yet this team keeps on winning more than they lose. They have shown fight in their games and willingness to dig in when they have every right to give up. They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, well after the year our team has had they should be unstoppable next year.

As fans it would be easy to give up also, many probably already have. After all, many have called it the worst season ever and the hits keep coming. But Im hoping to look back at this season and see it as a real turning point, a stake in the ground, a point where we saw the rebirth of our great club.

Regardless of the results of these last few games this season, I believe our team needs to be celebrated each and every time they take the field from now until round 26. When the board and teammates have deserted them, I want them to know that we the fans have not. I want them to feel what its like to have the best fans in the competition.

Our team is worth supporting and that’s something we shouldn’t take for granted and haven’t had for a very long time.

  • I 100 percent agree
  • Well said TBUR, your comments are a pot on! It has been tough watching our team win games knowing that we will soon lose points and drop down the ladder. But I have been amazed that the players keep turning up each week and as you say have won more than they have lost.

The team has been playing under extreme pressure since the start of the year. The fact that we keep winning shows they have managed to overcome all the adversity and can only mean that we will be stronger in the years to come.

It has been a crap year, potentially the worst I have witnessed in 35 years as an Eels fan. And again as you mentioned we need to get behind this current team and be genuinely excited each time they take the field. We finally have a team worth watching that deserves our support!
  • Yeeeee-ha! I'll ride with you TBUR.. just no brokeback mountain stuff okay?
    • Plenty of spare Unicorns around for you to have your own Fishbulb.

and just to clarify, NO arseless chaps either. Ive heard stories about you.....

  • The NRL haven't taken points off us yet, so anything is still possible. At this point in time we can still make the finals until the NRL says otherwise. You are right TBUR that Eels fans must keep supporting the team, since it is the players (and coach) that are supporting the fans, giving us something to cheer about.

I suppose we can keep speculating about what the NRL are going to do, but the ball's in their court now. We'll see what they really think of rugby league heartland and if they are taking it for granted.

  • Unfortunately I think if the NRL take 12 points we are gone. In my opinion 30 points will be the cut off this year, meaning with 10 games left we will need to win every game. With games against Cronulla, Canberra, Brisabane and Panthers I'd be surprised if we don't drop at least 1 game. Regardless of which I'm extremely proud of Parras tenacity this year and will support them until the very last game regardless of the NRLs penalty. The team deserves nothing less.
    • Agreed, which is why I said I'd support the team until their last game
    • Look at the NRL table now and take 12 points off the Eels.

      7th is Penrith on 18

      8th is Dragons on 18

      9th is Titans on 16.

10 Rounds to go the 8th team likely will win 50% of games

So we are on track to have a 28 point top 8 finish as per most years. Not much sign of needing 30 points. (And 26 or 27 points can happen sometimes)

For now we are still in this. If we beat the Sharks we would be looking a bit more realistic.

    • Actually you are right wedge. I forgot to take ourselves out of top 8 equation. I looked at 7&8 and couldn't see Panthers or raiders dropping 5 games. I think Titans and Dragons will be lucky to win 5 games, which means we could scrape in with 28. Tigers are a bit of an unknown though, they are playing some good footy. Wouldn't surprise me if they went on a run.
If by some miracle the NRL reduces our penalty to even 8 points we would be close to a certainty I think with how consistent we have been
    • If we beat the sharks, our chances increase significantly
