I realise there are many blogs made about players and whos good, whos bad , so in this blog i am asking you ,(If you were the current Eels coach ), What advise would you have to the team ? and also when speaking individually , who would you be focusing on and what advise would you give that player now ? This may be new training ideas ,thoughts or tips. How would you change things?

  • Well I think starting with Jarryd Hayne. He needs to change his role.

Firstly, as I heard a couple of the top commentators say, he needs to improve his support play, instead of being the player to create everything. Mateo is always looking for that offload, so a player like Hayne should always be around the ruck.
Also, when it comes to the high spiralling bombs, i know Hayne is so good at it, but it would be great if he would contest them, instead of letting a player like Mortimer (on a lot of occassions), contest it with the opposing fullback.

Defence, i'm very happy with if I was a coach, but the attack is the problem.
One tip: get the ball outwide more often. We have players like Tahu and Burt, who are such strong and experienced players that get very little touches and opportunities. They should be towelling up teams if they got more opportunities. I know Tahu is out now, but this season both those two have had very little opportunity. I say when Tahu returns, attack to the left please!
  • I'd put mateo at 5/8
  • - Quick play the balls!!! .. We currently lose so much ruck ascendancy due to our awfully slow play the balls...
  • As Chris said, i'd get Jarryd up closer to the attacking line sniffing for offloads for the first couple of plays in each set, then move back as a link man, playmaker towards the end of each set. The more his hands are on the ball the better.

Mateo would be doing extra mins in the gym to get fit. There is no point saying "put Mateo at 5/8th" when the bloke is having a blower after 15mins on the park. He is a ball playing lock and we could use him more if he could play more minutes.

Inu wouldnt be near the team. I'd blood Sio or give Etu another chance. He was strong in the 2-3 games he played last year or so.

Tahu would stop taking agree pills, he'd be banned from the club for the next 2 weeks to go away and get his head right

Morts and KK would be given an alternate week at Wenty (or 2 if necessary). Humble to fill in at 5/8th each week til they get some form and confidence. Their decision making lately has been terrible and its stopping the backs for getting the ball with any space or opportunity.

KICKING GAME!! What kicking game? i cant remember the last time we scored off a kick without it being a 1 person effort (chip and regather, grubber for yourself). Watch Lockyer and Israel on Saturday - i know we dont have a bomb master of Folau's quality, but Hayne/Reddy/Grothe can pull it off

Convince Sterlo to come on board in some type of assistant coach/advisor/halves coach capacity. It will make the difference especially with our young halves. Johns was rubbish and i dont think to contributed a thing to our game
  • For the team improve
    -quick play the balls
    - pressure opposition kickers
-better kicking game- kick to the bigger players and better jumpers like tahu, reddy, mateo, b smith and even burt instead of mortimer.
    - Spread the ball more instead of using 3 or 4 tackles doing 1 off hitups, throw it to the like of reddy and tahu and get them running onto the ball with space.

the individual players id pull aside are
Hayne- get involved when he touches the ball we score alot more.

burt - he is quick and slippery so get in their and be the support player, make him support like a fullback in the first few tackles then go back out to his wing, we saw when he played a few games at the 1 he had support play. that way he gets involved and its not just up to hayne. Tell him to stick with mateo and be his support player. I think if we have a support player for our major offloaders like mateo, cayless and hindy then we have more chance of broken style play which we excel at.

tahu, reddy and grothe- get your hands on the ball and go straight and hard, we know they can break the line and are hard hitters so give them some room and just run straight.

THe bench players- dont worry about fancy stuff just get on their and run straight and hard. When we were doing more offloading and broken style play we made other teams tired, if we do more of this then someone like humble or keating can come on and tire them out.
