I reckon Souths are going to do a Parra of 2009

I just went and backed Souths to win the comp at 34-1. Is it just me or is that astronomical odds for a team that is absolutely on fire, and in my opinion, has the most complete roster in the competition. I realise they're not in the eight but Newcastle have a tough draw and these two teams showdown in the final round where points are essentially worth double in terms of for and against. Souths therefore are actually pretty much masters of their own destiny. If they win all of their remaining games, their worse case scenario is they'll likely need a comfortable win over Newcastle in the final round. They have at least six players in their side who can bust your defence. Merritt, Inglis, Sandow, Sutton, Luke and Taylor. There's no way you can man up in any area of the park. You have to of course keep plenty of troops to handle Sutton, Inglis, Taylor and that leaves plenty of opportunity for Luke, Sandow and Merritt to tear you up, up the middle. Imagine if they hadn't of lost Burgess.

  • And get beat by the Storm in the GF.
  • I agree they'll ride the wave in now and overtake the knights. Then first week against the storm they're a good chance. With merritt at fullback they could beat them.
    • Don't have enough depth there centre and winger will get found out when they play the top teams
I do agree that finals is in there own destiny and are looking good
  • I was thinking the same thing when they won against the Raiders. Big wins against us and Canberra and a huge come from behind against the Dragons. Johnny Lang is very confident they can go the whole way and said there is an incredible feeling and self belief amongst the players.

They play Brisbane next week-that should answer some questions about how well they are really going. If they beat Bris in Bris and NQ those odds will shorten dramatically. I suspect Bris and Melb will play a style that will thwart their current style but time will tell and happy to be proved wrong. Your shout if they get up at those odds

  • Agree on waisted money but they will win 13 + tonight
  • Souths have done nothing since 1971! What makes you think they can make a grand final from even 4th or 5th on the ladder.
    • I agree Sutton has been disappointing this year - up until the last three weeks where I think he has regained his best form. With him & Sandow firing they can beat any team.

It is also interesting that the return to form of Souths coincides with the return of Taylor - so just where would they be if he wasn't wrongfully rubbed out for 5 weeks?

  • I hope they do. They are my second favourite team. I love their brand of football. Very exciting to watch.

Keep in mind, it wasn't long ago that they got absolutely flogged by the Warriors.

  • The problem is that they should have been performing like this throughout the whole season. They have a tone of injuries and yet still tear teams apart. Under Michael McGuire next year, they could be anything.
    • Even if they win the next three games they are not garranteed a spot in the eight i think they will crumbe ,but i would like so see south win...
