People on here like Poppa for example, please don't get the cane out on me just monday night blog that i want to bring up to get thoughts of everyone else. So i write a blog earlier in regards to what to do with Hodgson and something popped into my mind. It is a massive, massive long shot, but not 0%. Is an option for hooker in 2023 simply Reed Mahoney? The deal has been discussed by Reed himself, but how many times have you actually seen a player sign with a club and for it to be knocked back by the NRL for financial reasons? Israel Folau i think was like that in 2012 when he accepted 150K for one year and upgrade for 3 more and deal fell through but was never announced (could be way off though). The next thing is, if the deal is knocked back what happens next. Does Mahoney sit and wait as Canterbury get rid of parts of their squad to accomodate Mahoney, Kikau and now Ryan Sutton? Does that allow other clubs like us and the Dolphins to put offers forward to him? If it's knocked back is the contract still valid just waiting for squad to be thinned?

Last i heard is Canterbury have 22 players signed for 2022, now 23 with Sutton. They had 100k left for 8 more players on their squad, will the NRL allow that? They can move on with say Thompson but would be paying half his 800k salary, same with any other players they move on from, not a great squad building option but each to their own. It can be done, the way they are doing it shouldn't be done as it looks like a nice 3-4 year window to win a comp but after that they are screwed, a long term injury to a star they are screwed as they rely on juniors in their squad. So NRL knocking it back is a possibility, very slim but possible. As Lloyd Christmas mentions "So, you are telling me there's a chance?". Parramatta did not annouce Rein until around two months after everyone knew he had signed, so not uncommon not to announce the deal straight away as things can get in the way, but Papali'i and Niukore were both announced the day off announcement from media and it has been 4-5 months since Mahoney's announcement.

If i was to put money on it, i wouldnt risk it thinking it would not come about. I basically want a discussion from others here to see if they think like me being a possibility or it is a pipe dream or might know some stuff that could happen if NRL knock it back etc. Basically let's have some fun and dream and maybe most here think it is a possibility or majority might say i am my own type of unicorn, different to the ones that support BA.

All i can say is it will be a massive news story, could i feel like i did when Tom Brady announced his comeback? Hopefully as i loved Reed, and hope i can again haha.

  • I also thought the current Bulldogs hooker was very good against the Broncos. I actually thought the Broncos were lucky to get the win. There were some very dodgy calls by the refs

  • Reed and Kikau have not been announced by the Bulldogs. Which can only mean one thing. Their contracts are not yet registered with the NRL. Until those contracts are registered with the NRL the player is effectively unsigned. Both Reed and Kikau are free to take up any other offer they'd like for 2023. As long as the NRL register the contract then and only then is it complete.
Im not sure where things are up to with Reed right now. As all players say, "I leave all that to my manager" and his manager is basically the king of the grubs so who'd exactly know WTF is going on?

I'd hazard a guess and say Reed doesn't really know either. I'd imagine that Ayoub and Gould are telling him not to worry about it and he'll definitely be a Bulldog in 2023. However as in all business nothing is done until that paperwork is executed, which for NRL contracts requires an NRL signature too.
I feel Reed has been given extremely poor advice all the way along and he's continuing to get fed half truths. If he had 5 minutes with a decent manager like say, Clinton Shifcoske he'd very quickly make a move to secure his future today, not when the Bulldogs fix their mess of a salary cap.
However with Ayoub in complete mind control of Reed he's not going to listen to anyone at Parra anymore.
(I predict he'll end up back at the Eels after a disastrous Dogs experience).

    • I hope he'll be happy in reserves.

MA will be our hooker by then.

    • Nice response Mutts as always, who knows it might be knocked back Reed might think it is an average squad that has been poorly put together based on depth so why go there.

Reed and Parramatta atm would be content on where they are at signing elsewhere but now Hodgson is under a cloud in terms of uncertainty of how he recovers Parramatta could reach out to Reed and say hey what's up would you look at 650?

He has signed a contract, but is that contract null and void until registered by Canterbury? Or can it be like a thing hanged over his head with only Canterbury allowing his release from the deal?

      it's so fascinating.

      • As I understand it, until it's registered with the NRL it doesn't mean anything. Reed could sign with the Dolphins tomorrow for $800k and if the Dolphins get that contract registered with the NRL then the Bulldogs are left with nothing but a memento of their Chinese meal together. The contract is not enforceable.

        • Do you reckon if Parramatta had their time again they would monitor Reed? They signed Hodgson around a week or two after Reed signed with Canterbury, they were really quick to sign a replacement. Now, with this unregistered deal Parramatta would have been content with their decision for Hodgson as they do not technically need Mahoney. However, if they did not sign Hodgson, they could have been thinking now "you know what, it is still not registered, we could always renegotiate and see if he will back out" The contract not being registered mean he can actually back out easier.

When we signed Hodgson Reed said he was leaving and they wouldn't think much of the deal not being announced, but as time has gone and now Hodgson's injury they could pounce.

The only concern i have is if he were to go elsewhere in 2023 other than Belmore, the Dolphins would throw cash at him since they have missed out on hookers, Grant ain't leaving.

But that is another thing, if a deal can be struck why havent the Dolphins pounced or it even been mentioned in the media? Is it simply just waiting from word from the NRL or respect factor of letting the deal run it's course before pouncing?

          • Ayoub tells Reed what to do. That's why none of those scenarios have happened.

            • So you are saying Ayoub wants Reed at Canterbury and nowhere else Mutt?

I trust your opinion as you seem to make sensible judgements in discussions

    • We will be waiting 4 years for that to happen

    • I don't understand? How was it not announced? I saw the bulldogs announce both, quite a while ago now.

We should be a in a spot where we are a good enough team to beat everyone."
