I'm pretty excited about this game, we're close to full strength and we can see how we will cope without Hayne in the side. I'm actually a lot more confident we can win without Hayne than I have been in the last 6 or so years.
As I've said quite a few times on here, State Of Origin needs to be played on a stand alone weekend basis. Why should the players' main employer be penalised because of the NRL's #1 draw card event. Make no mistake this Penrith game rates as one the most important games for the Eels this year. We can effectively lock ourselves in the 8 during Origin with a win tonight. But now we will go into it without our best player. We aren't the only ones I know, but surely the club that pays his salary shouldn't be punished. His first loyalty should be to the Eels not NSW.
The clubs don't say anything cause they don't want to stand in the way of the players like Hayne potentially earning another $90k but this all comes at the expense of our club which is wrong.
I'm sure Hunt will go Ok but with Hayne there we are so much better.
And last year it was even worse when we had that impostor as our coach and I remember him being interviewed on the Sunday morning Footy Show before a game later that day when Hayne was under a cloud with that hamstring injury saying he wouldn't risk playing Hayne for the Eels before game 3 in Origin and they would do everything they could to get him right for Origin. Get Farked - Stuart was the Parra coach not the NSW coach or some other Blues Groupie.
On your point - it really isn't right that a coach like Paul Green for instance, would have looked at the draw at the beginning of the year and looked at the Origin period to see when his team have byes and who they're playing during that period. Instead of chalking up 2 competition points in their Round 11 fixture last week V the Raiders, he would basically have known they were little to no chance without his stars Thurston, Scott, Tamou and Tate. And so it proved to be the case with the Raiders running out winners. 2 points is 2 points and it could mean the difference between a Finals spot or an early Mad Monday. Conversely, why should Ricky Stuart and his struggling team be gifted 2 points by playing the Cowboys without the 4 players I mentioned??
It'll never be changed to a stand alone weekend, at least not under the current TV deal. And because its a guaranteed ratings behemoth in a weeknight prime time slot, whoever gets the next TV rights will want to keep it on a Wednesday night too.... So I don't know how you get around it. As bad as it is, I think we have to face the reality that the current scheduling and the unfairness associated with it is here to stay.
Yep its just fucked EeLlectric.
I mean potentially if Hayne plays all Origin games each year, he could potentially miss 5 NRL games if the byes don't coincide with our draw. 3 games before Origin and 2 more for his recovery. It just reeks I tell ya. He is contracted to the Eels. Our club pays his wage, which is guaranteed if he plays or not. Origin on the other hand isn't. Play you get paid. Don't play you get nothing. That's why players will play with two broken legs to get the top up pay.
"He played two weeks I think at left centre last year at the start. We abandoned that quickly but maybe we can consider it next year with Russell gone. Maybe a year or two next to the fox would sort him out."

If Hayne is out then this was always the best option.
Apart from Tonga being out, the rest of the squad is unchanged and not too disrupted.
Hunt will really need to have a go though and not simply do his job.
BIG shoes to fill.
I am looking forward to seeing how he goes in 1st grade. Fullback is his natural position from what I have seen of him
Bailey Beckhaus will be happy. Hunt covered well for Inglis and I look forward to seeing if he is dud or not.
Great that is what he is here for. Really excited for this game. Just need Mossop to play.

100% agree.
