Humble to start, Keating to bench

Tom Humble will start in the five-eighth position with Kris Keating shifting back to the interchange as coach Daniel Anderson seeks answers to his side's last start defeat against Newcastle.

As previously reported, Humble's move into the side was primarily a tactic to sharpen the performance of his halves, so with the Eel's struggling to score points last match, Anderson has now carried through on that strategy to give Humble his starting opportunity.

Keating will be used from the interchange bench - likely in the same well that Humble has been used. That is, if the side is travelling well he'll relieve Robson at dummy half but he also gives Anderson the opportunity to change up his halves if the new inexperienced six and seven aren't travelling well.

  • Interesting. Let's hope it works.

I think we are going to have a blinder matter what anderson does.
  • My own feel. The move is half right. Switch KK and Mortimer around and I'd be excited because that would be my preferred combination for the rest of the year..

I'm far less optimistic now about the weekend. We struggle to score points and the only one of our halves that has contributed any try assists is put back to the bench. *grumble* Well, this is the combination a lot of you wanted so let's see how it goes.

My biggest disappointment with this decision is that I have considered Anderson pretty fair in terms of picking players on form. To me, that clearly hasn't been the case in this situation.
    • I read you loud and clear 1-Eyed. I wonder how much of this decision is based on the fact that it might not perceived to be a good look to be benching your starting halfback who you re-signed earlier this year for $250K. Especially when it's easier to bench a guy who may or may not be at the club next year...
    • I would have benched Mortimer too.

DA seems to have a huge wrap on Mortimer so I don't think that will ever happen, proven by your point EelLectric that we paid overs for him to stay with us. I really hope he lives up to DA's expectations. I think he will DA is no fool, I think time is all he needs.
  • what is humble like at 5/8 is he better than kk?
    • If Cronk is getting signed i think this change is in order as KK will only be a part of our team if he wants to play 9. Give Humble a crack guys, he played 6 against Manly and we won without KK. I am not saying it was all Humble it was Hayne but Humble did his job.

KK is not cutting the mustard, is Morts? Not really but like we all keep saying he is here for another 2 years after this year and is still 20 and has more upside than KK so we have to pursue with him.

Cronk to 7, Morts to 6, Hayne stays at 1 and we get a decent 9 and we win the comp.

Defence is great but our attack stinks and i like the fact that Anderson is willing to move players if they aren't performing.

Lets see how we go, i am not confident this week but that is irrespective of the change to our halves i just don't know where our teams mental focus is at. If its on we win if not we could be in for a long night.

Its hard to get back on the wagon each week after dirtly losses but we love our Eels no matter what which is hard to say sometimes.

I would even be willing to start KK at 9 and move Robbo to the bench as a utility.
    • Humble will give you a better running gave at six than Kris in my opinion - he's faster and more likely to stand up his defender - but he is going to provide less support for Mortimer, who REALLY has to step up this week.
  • I think the great little blog by David about his chat with DA are very illuminating, clearly he has a massive opinion of Morts and that is why he is persisting. But equally he admits he is suffering from second year syndrome. I don't give a flying fudge right now about next season or who we signed going forward. I want our best 17 on the park that is going to give us the best chance of winning the Premiership this year, because there will never be a weaker year to win the premiership ever again given that the dominant side is out of the running.
  • My take on the Mortimer re-signing is that whilst DA defintiely wanted him to stay, I don't get the feeling he would have moved heaven and earth to make it so. I think the Mortimer re-signing became a bit of a vehicle for Osborne to show his credentials as a CEO/negotiator and by beating the Dogs to the crunch I think it gave Osborne a bit of a ego hit to be able to show off the signing of his golden boy. I get the feeling Osborne wanted Mortimer more than DA ever did.
  • How much truth is there behind the rumors that we are going to sign Cronk? I don't know but I wouldn't think we had enough money around for him.
