How to prepare elite athletes

Have we got the pregame and half-time speeches right? Is the collision game speeches effective to win? How important is the mental side of empowering players to exceed?

Do we have a winning philosophy /culture built into our inner coach?

  • What dumb questions. Every coach and club does the same thing. winning comes down to the quality of the roster and the amount spent on support.

Cleary was the Brian Smith of the NRL until he finally won a premiership in his 16th year of coaching. Did he suddenly become a great coach or was he just lucky the Panthers found a way to pay his son outside the salary cap? His finals record for the first 15 years of his career was 7 from 15 ffs

    • Every Club does the same thing? Pou, Have you watched his talk? I am happy to have you respond to what this Sports Psychologist with 30 years of experience has to say about preparing elite athletes with self-discipline coaching. Where did he go wrong?

      • Well you'll note this guy isn't a coach, he is a sports psychologist. The best ones obviously cost more than the others. I already addressed this above ("the amount spent on support"). The clubs with the most money will have the best sports psychologists. They don't leave it to their coaches to do it as a side job. They are too busy coaching. Whatever the coach can't do himself, the club hires people to cover it. The more money they have the better support they can hire.

  • How would any of us know if the pregame or half-time speeches are right if we're not privy to them

Don't assume BA addresses his team like he conducts an interview.

    • Listen to the psychology of empowering players to take personal responsibility.

Take the different strategies of how Russia's top down control is destroying the army and costing them heaps. They become a rabble when things don,t work.To dependant on the game plan and frightened to waver when things are not working. The Ukraine leadership style gives a lot of power to bottom up leadership where game plan decisions are made on what's in front of them.Far more successful when people are made to assess things on what is in front of them. You are not constrained to something that's not working and individuals own the problem and have much greater commitment mentally

Cameron Smith Cooper Cronk are good examples

      • For many years we were mentally weak. Mistakes at crucial times in a game, bad decisions, panic plays.

If you were watching Tad you might have realised they turned it around at the start of the 21 season with a big win over Melbourne. Penrith took us out in the semifinal but there was no bad plays, the difference came down to the ref awarding one team penalties and not the other

Late last year in the regular season many on here were talking about us missing the 8. The boys hung tough and not only hit the top4 but made the GF as well. I don't believe our team is as mentally fragile as you think they are

  • Speeches have got nothing to do with the mental aspect of sport. Confidence comes comes from knowing you've done the hard work before you go out in the field.

    • 100% Brett. Simulations  and repetition is how it's gained

      • How did we go against Penrith in the GF. Penrith had their act together We didn't We were playing in the GF the biggest game of the season. Players can be taught how to address small disappointments before they fall into a rabble with no answers

        • The Panthers are a battle hardered and seasoned team. It was our first time at the ball. It was their 3rd. That counts for a lot. That and our tactics were wrong all night. I don't know but I don't think we were good enough to beat them. We played into their hands kicking to To'o allowing him to wind up and lay a strong foundation for their attack. Should have kicked for touch all night. We tried to go through them when our forwards were being bashed and bullied instead of trying to go around them.
