How To Back A Winner

In my pre- teen years I started backing race horses. I continued on for many years, even attending race meetings under the age allowed. The big go in those times was the form guides in the newspapers and in papers devoted to horse racing. Invariably, those papers had pages and pages on the track work done by the horses as they were prepared for the coming race meeting. We would be told that Dogsbody ran his track work, 5 furlongs in about a minute, and was worthy of consideration. What that really meant was that we should back Dogsbody!

Today, there is no mention of any track work results.  Why would that be? Well, over fifty or more years we mug punters came to realise that the track work done by a race horse had no relationship to how the horse would perform in a race. So, the papers do not print track work results any more. What is true of race horses is true of rugby league teams training. What they do on the training field has no relationship on how they will perform in a real match.

What is significant in the form guides of horses today is that the performance of horses in recent, previous races are listed just as they were years and years ago. That is, to tell how a horse may run in a race today, you need to know how it was performing in, say, the last three or four races it had run. Just as to tell how a league side may perform in a real match, you need to know how it performed recently in a real match, not what it had done on the training field which is a wast of time as a guide.

To back a winner in a horse race you need to determine the class horse in the race. It is not easy! But class will win out of turn. The class horse must be in form. That is, must be in the period when horses are in form, about three or for weeks. The class horse results will be consistent and 'good'. If you determine the class horse`s price to be, say, 3 to 1 and you can get, say, 5 to 1 about it --go for it ,,thats a good bet. I have not bet in years. It`s mugs game! Gamble responsibly!

  • Amazing insight, pick the best horse in the race and put money on it.  Thanks for the tip i have been doing it wrong all these years.

And anyone who thinks trackwork isn't a good guide is kidding themselves.

    • I thought Fong WAS Trimbole
    • Agreed Alan
  • Only way to get a sure win is to fix the race.

    • But i don't have boat.
  • The only horse if u bet on was black caviar that was a certain winner . Champion
  • now how do i back a whiner? Because the form suggests i put the house on Mr Lloyd in the Cox hander stakes.
  • hey horo you are a fe****g  nark

  • What did I learn from this blog,

Do not Gamble and  read blogs that confuse the shite out of you.  Just for the record RL stick to the footy, this way we can all comment with some knowledge.

  • Gday Robert. My father is an avid reader of The Sportsman because they publish track work times. He is an absolute master on the punt and hits a lot of winners at good prices based off track work times. I have a punt every Saturday and I try to work out the class horse of the race but I also mix this with track work times. Ultimately I believe the fittest horse will beat the best horse if there is a large enough gap in fitness and class is similar between the two eg the class horse is first up from a spell versus a horse having his third run. Having said that the gap in class cant be that big....only a fool would back a maiden versus a group perfomer
