Pre season the Eels were tipped as the strong favorites for the wooden spoon. A big talking point was how insane it was to have so many players off contract in the same year. The jurno's were into us hard but it seems things have changed & with this change comes a change in the jurno's attitude towards our pre season situation.
All of a sudden it has been a huge benifit having so many players off contract.
I gotta say, these experts really know what they are talking about ( after the event )
The link to the story is below.
Just remember when reading news especially on our mighty Eels. The never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I cant work this out there is all this talk about manly coach des hasler getting the coach manly of the year
didn't have a bad year last year
they did come last no we did
but now we comd coming 6 place and look like making the 8
so how come BA not in the mixs of the coach of the year all i hear manly coach Storm coach Roosters coach of the year
This is Hasler's first year back at the club, he has taken a squad that he has inherited from 2nd last to near Top 4 knocking off the Premiership Favourites along the way, that's a pretty fair effort in my opinion.
Then you have Brad Arthur who had 4 years to build his Wooden Spoon winning squad and in his 5th season the squad improve into a Top 8 side.
Hardly comparable.
It'svalso the coach of the year not the coach of what you did 4 years ago
So both the cap issues caused by Des and those inherited by BA are irrelevant
Brad walked into the club at the perfect time just after Stuart had cleaned the club right out.
During this period, there was no real pressure on Brad to have a winning side and I think fans would agree.
Arthur should have brought young players that would have been the foundation for the next 10 years.
But instead people like you can't accept that he got it totally wrong, blaming staff and funding cuts etc.
Are you forgetting the players he recruited? Scott, Watmough, Foran. Do you actually think these players came cheap?
Imagine if he used that money to lure players like:
- Mitchell away from the Roosters
- Granville away from the Broncos when getting limited game time
- Arrow away from the Broncos when getting limited game time
- Cook away from the Rabbitohs when he was playing 2nd fiddle to Farah
Right now we are in the position we should have been in 3 seasons ago.
Good point Arnie. I was watching one of the NRL shows last night & they mentioned hasler has taken manly from 15th, last season to 5th this seaon. That's great but BA took the Eels from 16th, to 6th, but not even mentioned.
Plus, Manly look like real contenders for the title this year with their current form... we're going okay, but kind of limping along as well.
We got thumped when playing them, just managed to beat the Warriors, and really should have done better against the Dragons. Don't get me wrong I'll take it... but we're probably where we should be on the talent of our squad.
Favourites for the spoon yet the journos were calling us mad for having that many off contract? Wow they really know nothing.
I think it's more to do with that dipshit Corey Norman not over calling Moses that's the main difference... look at Dragons now!
It will be interesting if in the last game of the season at Bankwest we beat Manly and finish in fifth place ahead of them.
Would Des still be considered a better option than BA for coach of the season?
Definitely give it to Stuart ... then take it away and watch him go ... lol
